Do you use supermarket fuel or a premium brand?
shell diesel extra always, would never use supermarket fuels.
Noticed very little difference in my cdti over the last year, with all bar premium diesel; however, my old excort td loved even standard BP diesel and was good for an extra 5-8% mpg.
Quality is a big concern, and personally defo avoiding bio!
Was at a Total site very recently measure checking and was gobsmacked at the crud on top of the diesel coming out of the pumps even after passing through several filters. The pump fitter said it was pretty usual. But no reported breakdown problems, just hundreds of pump filter changes.
As far as I'm aware much petrol and diesel branding is just like groveries; repackaged. I've seen BP tankers dropping at Waitrose and Sainsburys. Shell dropping at Asda.
Hard to tell unless you take a sample and run it down to one of the few specialist fuel quality samplers in the country!
So for me: I fill up based on cost per litre as and where needed.
I am a Shell man and almost always use VM Power.
Avoid Supermarket fuel except Tesco Super 99 Unleaded as Thorney rate it very highly
Not the supermarket vs branded fuel debate again?
Supermarket fuel is no different to branded fuels. Who do you think supplies the supermarkets? The branded ones, that's who. Granted there may be one or two less additives in it, but is still meets/exceeds the minimum specifications.
It's also been said that the supermarkets use the same spec fuel that the branded ones were using a year ago. Whether that is true or not, I have no idea. But if it is, then those of you who were filling up with branded fuel last year might as well fill up at the supermarket now - as it's the same stuff you were buying last year.
I normally use either Shell or Tesco
One of my local Shell, Old Inns, has disppeared while the A80 is upgraded to Motorway and is due to be rebuilt in early 2010
I used some BP Ultimate Diesel in August, as it was the same price as standard diesel
I filled up for about 6 times / 200 litres
Didn't notice any difference and no change in MPG
It makes virtually no difference here in Scotland, all diesel is from BP Grangemouth
The only "imported" fuel is Shell V-Power and BP Ultimate, it comes from Stanlow
No need, just ask for the product data sheet for the fuel products
Forecourts are required to have these available on request
All the same in my book but depending on the turnover of stock, could this happen? http://www.howcleanisyouroil.com/DIESEL-FUEL-BUG
How often are the storage tanks at garages cleaned? If it's a busy site, when would they have a chance to do it?
Every need, it wouldn't be admissable evidence in the event of a court case. If we received a complaint with regard to the quality of the fuel a sample would have to be taken and tested by an accredited lab. Equally the data sheet doesn't have water on it, but there has been water found in underground storage tanks.
The data sheet is there to satisfy a COSHH requirement not to tell people they could nip down to Sainsburys to buy the same stuff for 2 pence a litre less is it, or that the fuel definitely conforms to the relevant British Standard, you'd have to analyse a sample for that. It won't tell the general public whose fuel it is, same as Proctor and Gamble aren't about to spill their washing powder beans, but they do have a list of ingredients on the pack.
That's pretty much what most people would like to know.
Never given it much thought untill the fairly recent tesco saga with causing fuelin probs. Anyway, my nearest and generally cheapest and easier to use (e.g not ramming 20 cars into a forecourt suitable for 4) is shell !
