    Default Disabled people's scooters.

Just wondred what peoples thoughts was on these.

I was driving into Durham City today and saw a person on the A181 (national speed limit road and quite twisty) riding one of these disability scooters also heading towards Durham, my initial thoughts were that should'nt be allowed. If anyone was to hit him he would'nt stand a chance, probabaly would be killed instantly. Surely his heart must be in his mouth every time he hears a car approaching.

I also remember seeing one night last winter at about 9.30, pitch black on the same road and a stretch where there were no street lights. The last thing you expect to see on that type of road at that time of night is one of these scooters travelling at approx 5mph.

I realise that people rely on these to get them about but maybe its time some laws were brought in for their own safety.

    What do people think ???

I assume that you are talking about a class 3 invalid scooter...
That is an outdoor only vehicle.
They can only be driven on public roads if they are fitted with lights and reflectors.
Normal class 2 (NHS provision indoor and outdoor equipment) is only capable of 4 mph and are not fitted with lights...
These are for use on pavements only, but it is permissible to cross the road at safe places.
(I am a driving instructor / examiner for the NHS mobility service in Manchester).

Personally I think the doddery old people who drive the outdoor power scooters are a death trap. Most of this being the limited mental state /reaction speed of the elderly people driving these vehicles.
Sadley mobilty SHOPS are after sales figures, not safety considerations.

I often have to quote safety information to my patients who quite often fail their driving assessment...usualy on sight or general sense / awareness. I am obliged to quote my DUTY OF CARE to the patient and those affected by their actions.

I panic with concern when I see these elderly harry-carry drivers on the road...possibly looking for an early exit lane to the next world.
I don't like these being around, but then there are a lot more elderly folk driving at 40mph on the M60 mtorway...in the middle lane!!

I just hope that they keep away from my front grill!!

Long time ago, I saw one do the whole r'bout in the outside lane. Caused chaos, not only did he nearly get wiped out, so did a few other cars !!

Otherwise the scooters are good and provide a little more freedom to the elderly.
When im old, ill have one - But of course it will be pushing at least 300bhp
