Default 3.2 V6 Knocking sound from engine bay

    Hello all,

Major problems with my V6, I heard a strange knocking noise from the engine bay about a month ago, took it to my local garage, who seems to suggest that its terminal. They suggest it could be the Big end bearings.

They are not certain what it could be, and that was just a suggestion.

Does anyone have any ideas what else could be causing it? The usuals have been checked, pulleys, oil level, belts etc. Definately sounds mechanical, and sounds like its coming from the centre of the valve block.

Also any ideas on cost for replacement and fittings of parts that could be causing the problem? or cost for a reconditioned engine?

Any help is definately appreciated, as I don't want to get rid of it, but if it doesnt cost too much i would consider a fix.

    Thanks

    Some questions that may help......

Sound from top of engine or bottom?

You say it's coming from the centre of the valve block, so is it a "knock knock" or "tap tap / tick tick" which could be a sticky valve.

How many miles has the oil done and do you know what spec of oil is in there?

Sorry to be vague but without hearing it, not sure where to start.

The garage has had the top cover of the engine off to look at the valves, all of which are fine. The car had a service about two weeks before the knocking started, and had an oil change. They also had to get a specialty oil in for the car, as they didn't stock it, so I assume they used the correct oil.

It is a knocking noise, and gets loader and faster when you rev the engine, then slows back down as the revs die off.

The Noise gradually gets loader and faster as the car is moving up through the gears and the engine rev's build up. I have had a second opinion today, the mechanic has found bearing deposits on the oil dip stick, indicating that a bearing has deteriated, and it dumping crap in to the engine. Definately related to the crank. He has recommended an engine rebuild place takes a look, they me be able to flush the engine of oil and deposits, and repair the damage crank or bearings. Alternatively I have a quote for a new engine. £1200 then fitting on top. My engine has done 102,000 miles, the quote is for an engine that has done 37,000. Once the rebuild is done and new part fitted, may cost the same as getting a second engine.

Hmm - I had a 1.8TD Mondeo develop a knock like this on the way home from work one Friday night - 80miles later knocking got much worse and the engine blew on the M25. AA man reckoned it sounded like a con-rod had snapped - I traded it in in the dead condition against another car so never found out what actually went wrong.

I'd personally think getting yours rebuilt is a better way to go, least you know where it's been so to speak, the 37k engine might have other issues, I doubt it but you never know!

Weight up the two costs I guess and go with that.

Given the 102,000 miles on my engine, potentially there could be more wrong with it, once they start stripping it down, to sort the problem. I have had it a year and only done 10,000 extra from when i bought it, so as for where it's been, I don't really know that much.

I think the potential for the rebuild cost to become quite large is uncertain, but do i pass up the chance for a second hand engine with only 37000 on the clock, at a price that could be comparable to the rebuild costs? hmm.....choices and decisions to be made.

I'll let you all know the outcome in the coming week.
