    Default engine light coming on

    hi.. 3 weeks ago engine yellow light came on revvs dropped to 2 rpm put engine was still running pulled over and stopped turned ignition of.. left for i minute started car running ok yellow engine light out car driving back to normal no problems.. 2 days ago did a 300 mile trip did it twice on the trip both times when i was overtaking up steepish hills seems to be under load conditions..both times i had to turn car of.. restarted it back to normal yellow light went out.. the last 100 mile was flat roads 70mph all the way home as sweet as a nut..the wifes used car for work today no problems..i did have a new centre section and back box fitted 6 weeks ago.. the car is using no oil or water no oil leaks and the engine is clean.. trouble is i have got a 500 mile journey at the weekend..hope you can help me out here guys i am not a mechanic all the vacuum pipes seem ok.. regards jim CAR IS 2001 VECTRA 2 DTI

    That's the classic symptom of a small hole in the intercooler pipes, theres one top and bottom of the intercooler radiator, Easy to replace but on the 2.2DTI they cost £80 odd quid and come with the centre connector Mine was just like yours, initially not liking hills/lots of throttle....VX dealers have these on the counter so they don't have to keep walking into the store every 5 minutes......
    You don't need to wait between ignition on/offs, just do it, but maybe not on the fly like I was doing...

    hi. thanks scouser.. where is the intercooler radiator i know there is rubber hoses near the turbo are those them.. are they rubber or steel..sorry i dont have a manual..does anyone have a picture...regards..jim

    The intercooler is the middle of the 3 radiators - behind the air-con condenser and in front of the water radiator.

    All of the air pipes in question are large and rubber. You can find them all by following the airflow out of the air filter box, through the turbo, over the top of the engine, into the offside of the intercooler, then out of the offside of the intercooler into the inlet manifold.

    Also check all of the thin vacuum pipes while you are under there. A tiny hole or crack or an end that isn't properly pushed on can also cause the EML to come on.

    hi..guys just an update.. the engine light has not come on for ages as i have not put car under stress uphill driving..was out today thought i would try something
    1st gear took to just under red line 5 rpm everything fine
    2nd gear 5 rpm everything fine
    3rd gear gets to 4 rpm engine light on loses power engine light goes out does not stay on then you can go back to 4 rpm engine light on loses power engine light goes of mind you i am doing 80mph here does not go into limp mode could this be linked to problem before.. is there a safety cut out on these..car runs great good on fuel...regards jim ..2001 vectra 2.0gti 100,000
