lol funny you say that, I got home yesterday from a 4 day break in the Lake District.
I travelled up the M4/M5/M6 from South Wales, to Windermere, stayed in a holiday park called Pound Farm. It was excellent, very very clean, comfy, quiet and very central. All the places to visit were very easy to get to with great road links, althoug I would recommend the smaller roads as they are fantastic. On the way home, I drove to the very North of Wales and down through Snowdonia, etc to home in the South. Really enjoyed it !!

My favourite part of The Lakes is around Keswick. The view from Friars Crag is one of the best I've seen in the UK.

We normally stay at the Queens hotel so not sure about self catering places.

Went to Keswick last month for 4 days, loved it, the scenery everywhere is just awesome. Wished we could've taken the dog too but there was no room in the car!!

Check out cottages4you.co.uk I have used the site a few times for cottages in Cornwall The Lake District and Wester Ross. You can usually find something at a good price and at short notice. If possible phone the owners and you can avoid paying the booking fee.
