Exclamation Swirl Bar Actuator: Diagnosis Needed!

    Hi All,

My car has been chugging on startup giving off nice amounts of grey smoke in the morning. This has now also led to poorer fuel consumption.

To my horror, i took the cover off today to have a nosy and it looks like the swirl bar item, is just sat there, not even covering the 4 holes. The 4th one is extremely gunked up.

I've posted some pics (not great quality), and was hoping if you could confirm my diagnosis.

The car was bought from Network Q, and is still in warranty till february so if it is terminal, I want to get it booked in ASAP.

    Thanks

Don't if that's the REAL cause for the gray smoke you're having, but if you have warranty until Feb., I'd change the manifold anyway.

But do the pictures seem to prove my theory correct? That the swirl bar is goosed?

Looks fine if it was off it would be lying on its side and you wouls see the pegs that it connects to.

Also if it is a couple of years of at least I'd says its had the manifold replaced.

As for chugging EGR? Possible air leak?

you have the old design manifold and has not been changed by the look of it, look here to see the difference http://www.vectra-c.com/forum/showthread.php?t=92579

i would point this wear out to your dealer also the underlying problems with smoke etc, beware as they may only clean the egr and may avoid any replacement of the inlet manifold before your warranty runs out. one of the MOST annoying things about this problem is that every time you come to a standstill with your heater on it drags fumes in from the engine bay that are leaking from the manifold.

you have the old type of Inlet for sure..

but it doesnt look to me like the bar is off.. The bar sits on pegs that have a ball type joint...

If its still in warrenty *cough* pull the bar off *cough* :O

Thanks guys, EGR and boost sensor have both been cleaned by myself, and according to the chassis number, it shouldnt be one suffering from the 3rd injector issue.

Can't say ive notied it dragging in fumes when at a standstill, but there has been a definate downturn in acceleration under 2k, and also drinking more diesel.

I'll take it into vx, where they will no doubt mention "if we cant find anything wrong, you will be charged £85 inspection fee"

did you clean the hole in the inlet manifold where the egr bolts on ???, its only a small hole and always gets blocked so when you clean the valve it still don't allow full flow ! its awkward to see and get to but its a must.
