Default Vectra Carrier Bolts - Need to be replaced?

    Hi,

Basically changing the discs on the veccy and from haynes/guides on here and other sources, I have been told the carrier mounting bolts MUST be replaced. Fair enough.

However I have called over 10 motor factors, and 4/5 Dealers and no-one stocks this item. Now this shocks me as if this is being replaced every time discs are getting done, there should be lots of them!

I brought this up with a dealer who said he doesnt believe they change these bolts and also they havent sold any in 2 years! Making me think not even fitters (eg Kwikfit) change them as all the motor factors said its a Vauxhall specific part, and people have to get them through the dealers.

So why if after all sources say they must be replaced, does no-one seem to bother, especially considering it is a braking component?

6? So they can only change 3 more discs before they're out. I would of thought they would get that much custom within a week or so?

Also another dealer said he doubted they bothered as its not even included in thier brake kit. I called Dealers in Norwich (x2), Ipswich, Bury St Edmonds, Cambridge, Ely [i think] and Manchester! One of them had 3 bolts but he was the one who told me he hasnt sold any in 2 years! All the others didnt have any and didnt think they replaced them when doing discs. Doesnt seem a tad odd?

    Me again...

I meant to post this morning that the parts guy dealer I went to was surprised that I wanted to change the bolts and even more surprised then I said that both TIS and haynes said to change them.

They had to order them in and said they didn't have any because their own service department didn't usually change them!

I decided to order them and wait rather than re-use the old ones because I felt that they are a somewhat critical safety item and it's well worth buying new ones for the sake of a few quid and a short wait.

When you read the TIS and see the torque figure for these,it's not suprising that they are supposed to be changed !

Yep, I'm sure they must be under a lot of stress - and maybe even stretch - under those torques and so re-using the old ones may mean that they may not hold everything together properly and/or may fail at some point.

But baring that in mind, why does it appear that the dealers do not not seem to bother replacing them? I hear a lot of negative comments about them but they are not stupid to start skimping around the brakes. They also made a valid comment that its not even included in the sale of thier Brake Kits.

Maybe they believe the instructions are far too OTT? While 230nm is a frick load, wheel nuts are done upto 110nm but they are taken out more often which I presume does more damage as you always need to apply a whole lot more than 110nm EVERY TIME you remove them! But no-one bothers replacing them?

Also how crazy would Vx be to have those bolts tighten to 230nm on the brakes if they can not COMFORTABLY handle it?

Not saying im cheap but tbh dont have time for them to arrive! Im going away and if I dont do it this weekend, then the Veccys brakes wont be changed for a few months . And I'd like to understand the situation more. Sure changing the bolts everytime you take them off is 'better' but will it really make a difference.....?

Sometimes I'll replace them sometimes i wont. If its only off once then probably wont change them, but it i take them off a 2nd time then they will be changed.

The main thing you need to do if your reusing them is to properly clean all the old thread lock out properly or your going to get false torque readings. For the record, I changed mine, the dealer had loads but the pen pusher didn't have a clue, I even had to point them out on EPC. So it sound to me like the mechanics use them but the parts guys just see's part numbers.
