Default 2.2dti slow to start problem?

A friend of mine at work has a vectra, 2.2dti 2003 reg with 138k on the clock.

It hasnt had the best owner in the world, as its been without a service for the last 60k

Any way i mentioned i can get parts for sevice cheap and done a oil, filter and airfilter change in some spare time at work. ( i also cleaned the boost sensor-it was pretty gunky!)

He also mentioned its slow to start once been sat over night. Seems to chug-chug-chug then start? Does this sound like a air leak? or in need of a new diesel filter? i dont know much about this engine? I Dont think its the glow plugs as it does it on warm morings/afternoons?

    Any ideas ?? Thanks

could be a few things craig are there any fault codes recorded p1405 egr valve stuck open (usually a fault on wirring harness conector).may be a softwear problem(reprogram ecu, decrease cold start injection and modify preheat phase)
cheapest is to change fuel filter first job,be sure to fill fuel canister with clean fuel or you will have big problems bleading it up ( Dti's are pigs to bleed)

We had exactly the same problem with the engine in a frontera. No fault codes, but leaking injector seals. The injectors are affordable but the job to fit them is one of the hardest you will find on a modern car. The engine is 16v but single overhead cam, so you have to remove the cam shaft and all the valve follows to change them. Not nice. Access is also apparently more limited on the vectra. The cam shaft is differcult to put in again as it is slightly different to normal, though been single over head cam.
