    Default Help with two problems

Hi everyone, can anyone help with a problem? when applying the brakes there is a slap type sound simlar to me slapping the bodywork of the car with my hand, it only noticeable when slowly moving and is intime with my foot touching the pedal, once ive heard the noise it wont happen again unless i havent braked for a while.

I have taken all four wheels off and nothing seems amiss, the brakes are nearly new allround, ive allso checked the wheel bearings and they are fine, also there is no loss of performance in the braking system.

It may also worth noteing that yesterday i went for a short 4 mile drive then parked up but when i reversed slowly there was a scrapping sound that sounded just like the exhaust had dropped, i moved forward then back again and it still made the noise, i got out and all looked ok underneath! i drove around the car park twice then tryed reversing and there was no scrapping sound and as of yet it has not returned,

Can anyone help or give me some pointers to check?

regarding the braking noise - i suspect a build of of corrosion on the inner surface of your rear discs - the noise will be because the wear is being forced round the other way - you could have the discs resurfaced which would remove the noise - but it will eventually return

the slapping noise sounds like it could be from the brake master cylinder - has the brake fluid been replaced and the system bled properly recently ??

check to make sure both caliper carriers have 2 torx screws in and that one of them isnt missing could be caliper lifting upwards and then falling down again

checked this afternoon, all bolts present and set at correct torque. note to others using torque wrenches, make sure after use that you release the tension in the wrench after use, as if like me you leave it and dont use it for some monthes it will seize and if you have my luck like me you'll have to replace your expensive one with a cheapo!!!

Did it only start when you had the brakes done?

new discs and pads at back, new pads at front with skimmed discs, i had problems with brakes (eeak noise) before, and the garage did the above work and did not fix, and on forth visit they realised that a pad either side at the rear neaded to be clipped onto piston first and this rectified noise, and ive been ok for nearly 1000 miles, but now as mentioned i have another (slap) noise, i doubt very much the brakes were bled when i took the car back so as you mentioned could this be the issue??? if so could you explain a bit more? the brake fluid does not look old and the boiling point is acceptable, nb my car is booked in for an oil change tuesday so i may get them to change the fluid?

Is the "slapping" from the front or rear?

What make of brake pads did you have fitted?

Did you have new discs fitted at the same time?

I'd hazard a guess at the rear pads being slightly smaller than the old ones and hitting the caliper when you brake. IIRC, the design of some rear pad retainer springs has changed.

EDIT - seems like you've answred my questions in another of your threads http://www.vectra-c.com/forum/showthread.php?t=92165

Sorry im having problems with my internet connection, and for some reason i had a duplicate post this morning, i cant make my mind up weather the noise is from the front or back but id say the noise is either at the back from both corners or at the front to the rear of the engine bay in the middle ( as if between both passenger and drivers footwells)
Id hazzard a guess its not the brakes themselves that are noisey but more something along the line from the pedal to the discs??? i first suspected it was the brake light switch but i noted that just made a quieter 'click', others have suggested suspension but that checks out ok (basic bump test each corner) and my noise is only at very low speed and when the brakes havent been used for a period of time, this problem would not of bothered me if i hadnt spent so much on the car,

any advice would be gladly received,

    mike
