    Eek The Dash Strip

The Dash Strip - The Full Monty

So the weather was good in Denmark last weekend and I had still not got around to wiring up the CD70 and after plenty of advice and help from Robsey and kenp I decided to get the unit properly installed instead of the GPS fakra unit sliding all over the dashboard as the aerial unit would not fit my 2.0T estate.

It turns out that I can't get the GPS Fakra cable through the dashboard easily as I had decided to install in next to the Sun Sensor in the windscreen as Robsey suggested - it seem that Facelifts don't have the same dashboard openings where the sun sensor is than prefacelifts so I thought sod it and stripped and partially removed the dashboard so I could run the cable. Damn it was a sod of a job and took me the best part of 7 hours to strip and refit but gave me a better understanding of how all the trim panels and switches fit together for when I hard wire my phone charger etc ... also allowed me at the end to fit my VXR / OPC steering wheel

I will post the pictures as maybe someone has some use in the future ...

So this is what I needed to fit ...

    So the strip begins:

Airbag out steering wheel off ... instrument panel removed ... switch blanks out, vents out, glovebox out ...

Boot was useful for parts storage

Found a mass of wires and connectors in the rear center console along with the rear cigarette socket - I guess Twin Audio and some other toys maybe heated rear seats ...

Time for stripping the rear console - getting there

Damn - need control stalks off to get the dash out a little more so my hand can fit in to get the GPS fakra wire through the same hole as the Sun Sensor

Fakra GPS in the right hole - turns out the only hole there is on the facelift is the one for the Sun Sensor ... Trying to get both Sun Senor cable and fakra GPS through the same hole is not easy

Ok - job done and dash back in position - note to self for next time remember that there are 2 air sensors in the left and right vents that need removing before pulling dash ... now can I only rememer how to refit all this stuff!

Ok time to swap over the cabling from the Vectra steering wheel to the Astra OPC (VXR) steering wheel - if anyone gets a VXR wheel from an Astra / Zafira keep the Vectra airbag and all I had to do was unclip the 2 earth connections and remove the connector from the switches and swap that whole wirng loom from the Vectra setup to the Zafira / Astra OPC (VXR) steering wheel as the yellow plug shown in the pciture below would not fit my vectra connection but the connectors for the controls and earth wires are the same...

Damn camera battery ran out ... final pictures will come when I can find the battery charger - but refit not photoed

... To refit as Haynes always say:

"Refitting is a reversal of removal ensuring that all wiring is correctly reconnected"
    Got it back together eventually

    Job is a good'un ...

Thats a big job mate, defo wouldn't like to tackle it myself. When you reassemble don't forget to put the steering wheel on the right side

It was suprisingly easy to strip the hardest part that caused me the most pain was trying to get the wires through the same hole ... and I did it alone (well Haynes was helping) and luckily I ended up with no leftover parts on refit ...

yeah ... these Danes love us Brits ... it takes a while to get used to left hand drive cars - at least the pedals work the same ...
