Default What are the sypmtoms of a dodgy MAF Sensor

I think mine might be ******ed, a while back i put an iduction kit on my 2.2dti, it ran alot better for about 20 miles lol, then eml came on so i put a standard panel filter back in.

But for a long time now my care hasnt felt right, very sluggish below 2k and i feel it needs to be driven more like a petrol with high revs.

But to really confuse things it will sometimes have a spurt on and feel like it used to powerwise.

Ive cleaned egr, fuel filter, airfilter etc and always has a service well before its due, the car has covered 115k nearly.

Just didnt want to buy a new maf to find out ive wasted my money

Funny you should say this, we have played with our car. New 3" stainless downpipe and exhaust, BSR stage one and air filter mod and all was fine and drove to PV and back about 1200 miles ish fine. Put in a K&N filter and the car has never been right since, similar problems like yourself only our engine management light comes on for the MAF sensor, that has since been replaced and still have the same problems. But because we did all these different mods wer're not sure what is causing it.

Oil from K&N filters and the like has been known to stick to the MAF sensor 'hot wire' thereby affecting the signal that it sends to the ECU.If it's covered in oil, then most likely the airflow isn't cooling the wire down enough and the ECU takes this as a reading of much less airflow than it is in reality.Less airflow means less fuel for the engine to burn.

MAFs are about £120 from VX I think. You could try cleaning the wires with solvent.

Yeah about £130/£150 ish from dealer but down here they could take about two/three days to get one. May be different in your area though. Lets hope yours gets solved with a new MAF, even with our new MAF it's still throwing it up, I'm currently looking for a cheap standard downpipe to try and see if it help whilst Matt reckons it's the map!

the simplest way to check if a maf sensor is working or not is to unplug it! then if you drive it and its not any different its not working
