    Default lots of electrical gremlins

Right, car refused to start on friday, had been getting more and more difficult to start as it got colder so i assumed the glow plugs had finally packed in, spent hours replacing them, couldn't get one out so had to settle for 3 new ones only instead. Jump started fine drove it round turned off and on again a few times. came back out the next morning refused to start. So i got it jump stared again and left it with my local garage and they replaced the battery.

Now, got in it this morning and it was very reluctant to start again then the power steering stopped working and a little symbol with a steering wheel and exclamation point came up in yellow and the abs and traction control lights came up, it sorted itself out after a couple of minutes driving with no power steering but then the stereo kept cutting out and the abs and traction lights keep coming up. Whats happening ?!?

sounds more likely that its your alternator that's the problem.

its not putting out sufficient voltage to charge the battery and run your electrics and then drained your battery and may have damaged it hence it was replaced - did the garage that replaced the battery do a voltage check before and after they replaced it

you need the checks on the alternator doing on and off load

think thats gonna be the problem component

It does sound like the battery is losing voltage, which more than likely means the alternator is not charging the battery!

With the engine off put a meter across the battery terminals, you're looking for about 12 volts plus (!). With the engine running you want about 13-14 volts across the battery.

My alternator fault, appeared Monday, is only showing up as the battery fault light at the moment! With my engine off the battery voltage is 12.13 volts, with engine idleing it dropped to 11.88 volts; meaning the alternator isn't charging and the voltage drop is due to the electrical circuits that are running.

As Deztroyer has said, it sounds like you're battery is struggling to power everything and also charge.

Well, that sounds feasable, i'm a bit annoyed the garage i took it to didn't spot this though if it is the fault as that would sound like a basic test you would do after fitting a new battery. Lets just hope the car starts when i come to it next otherwise i'm stuck at work again

its a basic test that the garage SHOULD have done - and if you leave it too long your new battery will be cream crackered as well

I ordered my alternator on Tuesday. It's an 'exchange' item which has cost me £240 but I get £75 back when I give them the old one; so it's £165.

I am fitting it on Saturday. I might even take some photos and attempt a How 2.

I changed my alternator this morning on a 04 plate 1.9 cdti (150PS). It took 2.5 hours in total but included lots of chatting and faffing around; 1st time I have done it.

If I had to do another one I am sure it can be done in about 1.5 hours, or less, with help. It is a relatively easy job, hardest parts were trying to get fuel filter crash box nuts off (crash box was moved to make it easier to get alternator out the top) and get cup of tea out of my brother's wife.
