    Default Anyone lift weights?

Just after a bit of advice realy, if anyones into this then please post up any advice as it will be appriciated.

Basically ive just bought myself a nice new set of dumbbells to use rather than going to a gym. Not since im a beginner, what do you think is the best way to start off and whats the best program to follow?

Ive got 2 small bars (for lifting with one in each hand) and 1 big bar ( for lifting on a bench, the bar is 6kg on its own) and the weights ive got are:

    4x 5kg
    2x 2.5kg
    4x 2kg
    4x 1.25kg

So as mentioned, any advice welcome. Im looking for a good quality lifting bench if anyone knows of one for sale. Had a look on a few sites but they seem expensive.

Im in an office all day now apart from a few trips out so need something to keep me active and build myself up a bit.

    Cheers
    Matt

hi matt did weights a few years ago i used to limit myself to the amount of reps and build the reps and the weight up when i felt confident also seem to remember the phrase mmf which means momentarilly muscular failure which is when you phisicly cant push the weight anymore

if you're getting a bench then your gonna need some more weights, get a couple of 10kg, a couple of 20kg, and possibly a couple of 15kg weights, even if your not going to get into heavy lifting these will make thing a lot easier for you rather than having to add all the weights you currently have. and if your just starting out my advice would be to take it easy for the first month of lifting, getting used to the weights without killing yourself, lift what feels comfortable to you and only straining on the last couple of reps on each set, try to keep a nice uniform movement on every rep you do. then after about a month start to increase the amount of weight you lift pushing yourself further and keep increasing when you can...

ta for the advice mate. Im currently just using the 2 small bars with 2.5 k on each and while standing up and holding them im just lifting them one at a time only bending my arm at the elbow so im lifting them to my chest. doing about 100 reps a night per arm just to get my muscles used to the extra work.

Although a very kind member on here has offered to draw me up a guide for training so just waiting on that before i go full on.

Thanks again for the advice mate.

no worries mate..just one last thing to remember....

light weights----4 sets of 12 to 15 reps equals nice toned muscles

heavy weights----4 sets of 6 to 10 reps equals nice big muscles

    and remember....have fun!!

I train 4 times a week, my advice would be to join a gym... you'll find if never trained you strengh etc will increase very quickly to a point, you'll probably pass the weights you have and the benchin within 4 to 6 months if do it religeously...

But if not pop onto ebay, you def get a bench for pick up only for dirt cheap. no one ever want to post them... you can do a lot of arms shoulder and back work with the bars and weights you have, but if you bob to tesco they usually or have had in the past 10kg iron plates for really cheap...
