Default Fault on Steering Angle Sensor c1531

Steering wheel Warning light on, heavy steering

Read the threads on fluid top up - not really got time to crawl about removing trim so took it into Vx for tech 2 just in case

Fault code 1531 - steering angle sensor voltage high, leads to 1526 Steering motor not operating

Solution - New CIM 430 - OW ! ( i was hoping they'd just top fluid up and that would cure it :-(

So bearing in mind this is the same dealer that wanted 300 plus to change boost pressure and mass flow senors on the turbo when a pin hole in a 50p tube was causing the fault I thought id ask for some help !

obviosuly the fault code isnt a low fluid issue - but is it worth taking the arch liner / bumber off to check it anyway (damned if i can see the level from the ground) ?

is the steering angle sensor accessible ? can it be replaced ? One thread suggested cleaning connector pins by the pump - is this where the sensor is located or is it on the steering mechanism

or a CIM from a breaker ? (in which case wouldnt it have to be set up by a Vx dealer ?)

Or do I have to bite the bullet ?

    opinions appreciated guys

    Default strange

Bit odd this, having read other threads about steering wheel warning I bit the bullet, took the bumper off and topped up the power steering fluid which was down to min

Test drive shows power steering present (notice the difference :-)

Still got the fault light - might do the battery trick to try and get rid of that

Dont understand how low fluid might cause the steering angle sensor to give a high reading though (as that was the tech 2 fault code)

    strange stuff

but thanks to the How2 contibutors once again

    cheers

    phil
