confused Free dump valve on 3.0 CDTI ??

I have noticed on a couple of occasions recently that when arriving home, the exhausts sounded meatier than normal, in a good way.

However, when I got in this evening, the exhausts were again sounding meaty, so I revved the engine to 'have a listen' and it produced an awesome 'flutter' type dump valve noise. I left it running and popped the bonnet and sure enough, a very obvious new noise when revved!

I excitedly recorded this on my phone and when calling a mate to discuss the situation, there was a noise, like a 'click' from the engine and the exhaust note went back to normal and the revved like normal too.

I'm confident this is a problem, does anyone have any ideas as to what it could be??

    Chris

    Chris,

I too had a strange fluttery dump type noise from I think my exhausts today (2003 v6 cdti auto estate 100K) after revving to 4500rpm to listen to it and see if there was any smoke. Never heard anything like it before. Seemed to happen as the engine reached 3500rpm on the over run. I had just put in some injector cleaner run the car around for 15 mins, accelerating hard as the bottle said. I shall listen again tomorrow to see if it is still there.

    Shouldn't be, unless it is a Z30DT
As a 55 reg, it should be a Y30DT and no DPF there!

The flutter noise you hear should be the turbo, quite normal, typically as the engine passes 2000rpm
It could be the butterfly valves are sticking, and this is the click you are hearing

With the engine revving and bonnet open
Can you feel any drafts of air at either side of the engine cover?
Compare between exhaust quiet and loud

Have you fitted any type of engine modifications?

Mine does that too. Depending on how bad the injector wobble is The more wobbling, the meatier exhaust note lol

It is the Y30DT lump with it being a facelift. I haven't modded the engine, it even has the standard air filter fitted to it.

It is only on a couple of occasions that the exhaust note changed and it was fine and normal today. Unfortunately I'm the type that notices even the slightest differences with the car, so this really stood out last night!

I couldn't feel any drafts either side of the engine cover when I got in this evening, will try again if the boomy exhaust returns.

I'm sure it is a wastegate/dump valve as I've had a few cars in the past with dump valves fitted - luckily I recorded the noise on my phone if that is any good.

There is no Y30DT facelift unless you modded the front of your car to look like a facelift

    So which is it then
Old style square lights with Y30DT
    or
    Facelift swooshy lights with Z30DT

If Z30DT, then it may have DPF
If so, does the regeneration light ever come on?
