Stone chips

I've noticed a couple of chips/small scratches on the roof of my car that I assume have been caused by either stones or something being put on the roof. I've got some touch up pens, but these little chips are down to the metal and are starting to surface rust. Any tips on how to remove the rust on such a small area? I don't want to damage the surrounding paintwork by using sand paper or wet & dry.

i put a small blob of that rust killer stuff on mine then just touched up over the top of it,that was 6 mths ago and no sign of that nasty rust coming back though the paint.

Small areas like that, I've always used a small, sharp screwdriver blade edge/tip to remove the rust from the exposed metal and to smooth the edges of the paint. Wipe clean newly exposed metal with meths, then apply a small touch of rust preventer, wipe away with meths after required time, apply a small amount of primer in 2 applications allowing each application to dry. After the second has dried, then 2 or 3 applications of the colour coat & if applicable, laquer. That's always worked for me.

Yes, thats what I do. I use a jewellers screwdriver to clean the metal. I also make sure any loose paint is chipped away, using this screwdriver. When painting, ensure you seal round the original paint so water cannot creep in behind it otherwise you can end up with water creeping under the paintwork and rusting under the paint.
