    confused Low oil warning?

While I was driving on a French motorway at the weekend, I had the "Low Oil" warning in the tacho display (oil can). I pulled over into the next services, expecting to find an oil leak, as I'd checked it before I left home (and wondering what the French is for "Semi-Synthetic diesel 10W/50" Or whatever it uses). I got out and couldn't smell hot oil, opened the bonnet and all was fine, well up on the dipstick, even after just stopping. I started up again and the warning was still there. "Dodgy sensor", I thought to myself and set off again. We stopped for lunch and, as I restarted the car the warning had gone, and didn't reappear on the 130-odd mile trip home.
So, does anyone know where the sensor lives on a 3.0 CDTi? Does it give problems?

    Phil

When you turned off the car did you let it sit for a while to let all the oil to return to the sump before dipping it???

If you did then it must be a sensor hopefully its not to expensive.

I didn't need to let it sit -the oil was at the halfway mark on the dipstick just after I stopped. Would have been almost at the high mark if I'd let it sit.

The low oil sensors are normally located on the sump

    Phil,
I have had the same problem with my 2003 3.0 cdti auto estate. First time happened in 2005/6 on a motorway (in France!) after around 1 hour of driving. Pulled off , checked oil which was fine. Drove home, around another 30 mins. switched off and on again and it had disappeared.

Then around 18 months ago on the way to UK after driving on dual carriageway at 70mph on cruise for 90 mins, oil light came on. Stoped to check but oil was spot on. Had a coffee in the services and light was off when I restarted. Did not come on again all the rest of the way to the uk and back.

Then a few months later, doing exactly the same journey to the uk the oil light came on again in exactly the same place, just before my usual coffee stop. Same thing, level fine and light was off after 15 min stop.

Hasn't happened since BUT on 2 later trips to the uk in exactly the same spot the low coolant light has come on. Guess what, level fine both times and light is off after the coffee break!

I have no idea what can be wrong but hasn't happened on short journeys.

    Sounds just like mine.
Weird. This was the first time it had done it on mine, and it hasn't done it since. I used to get the coolant level warning on cold mornings, but I sorted that out.

I have not yet been at my mechanic, but if I remember correctly there was a sensor about an inch above the bottom of the sump on the driver's side (UK wrong side ).
