    Default front facing gatso camera

i was on my way home from work the other day, i just come off a 50 mph road and onto a 30mph road and was basically on auto pilot, there was 2 lanes in both directions and a camera in the middle on the pavement which can be turned to face both ways. Now the camera was facing towards me and as i approached it it flashed me but i hadnt reached the white markings on the road, i thought it could only falsh me if it was facing towards the rear of my car as i went through the lines, i was also in the nearside lane and hadnt crossed onto the other side of the road. Is this right as i didnt think it worked like that, several people have told me its "illegal" as its dangerous to flash towards you as it can temp blind you and cause an accident, sure enough ive had my letter and i was speeding so deserve the ticket and cant complain, but if there breaking the law to get my money then thats not right either and they shoudnt get away with it............................ any thoughts or advise appreciated, thanks

not an expert by any means, but, was it one of the newer- front facing speed cameras that have been trialed? if it was the bog standard gatso, were there speed lines on the other side of the road that they could of used to calculate your speed?

Does the NIP you recieved state the speed you were going? Theres a popular forum that will give you class advice on this, not sure if im allowed to advertise it?

If it was a Truvelo camera (I presume you've used "Gatso" as a generic term, rather than this specific camera actually being one of that brand?) then they do flash forwards - IIRC, they originally used infra-red flash but some now have a selection of coloured filters, to aid getting a clear capture of the registration plate.

PS - if it's Truvelo, then there won't be any painted lines on the road - the piezo sensors are buried underneath it.

cheers mate, but just wondering if its a truvelo why would the paint lines on both sides of the road, the lines are first on the right lanes then the camera then lines again after the camera on the left lanes, there not directly next to each other and the camera can only face one set of white lines, unless of course theyve updated the camera????

That would be my guess tbh - the sensors get buried in front of front-facing cameras, whereas the old lines would be painted beyond a rear-facing camera, so they get left when the camera gets changed for a newer model - it's not worth resurfacing more of the road than necessary.

This has me thinking now. We all know that the cameras that will photograph the rear of the car if you happen to be going to fast are painted bright yellow and black on the back of the camera box and grey on the front (Gatso camera?).What about the cameras that are painted bright yellow on on both front and back, are those the ones that can get you as they drive towards them?
