Eek I cant believe i did that!!!!!!!!

Went out this morning in a bit of a rush, noticed i was low on fuel, popped into garage to fill up and yes you guessed, I put 20l unleaded into my diesel tank realised as soon as i put the nozzel back on the pump!!! Felt sick at first, then got a guy to help me push it round back of garage and called AA, got towed back home then waited for contaminated fuel van to turn up and empty system and refuel with 10l of derv.
Turned out to be an expensive morning, £20 unleaded,£185 to clean out system & £30 to top up again... yes i felt a ****!
Anyway all running ok again now and i'll take my time filling up in future

If you'd have turned the key and drove off, I think about 5 minutes or so later it might have become considerably more expensive

Years ago i put £10 diesel in a petrol, did excatly the same as you, didn't realise until i put the nozzle back in. The guys came out to push around the back, I asked whether they wanted me to sit in and steer, no no sir we'll do it. I watched as they pushed it around the corner and into a wall!!!! Got the tank emptied for free, new bumper, headlight and indicator. Guess what, it was a VX dealership as well!!!

Hope that makes you feel a bit better

My other car. 1972 1641cc slammed beetle. On the road finally!!

    Yip, what a plonker!

It's happened to the best of us. I did it too (what a nugget!) when I had a diesel Vec B and missus had a petrol Vec B. I had filled hers up the day before with unleaded, went out in mine and needed fuel so I stops off and proceeded to completely fill my diesel tank with unleaded fuel (£45). I only realised when the nozzle went CLICK!! (yeah it CLICKED! alright) Then just like you I felt instantly SICK! I couldn't believe it. Got RAC to recover the car to a local garage, £150 later I was on my way then had to fill up with £50 diesel. So it really cost me nearly £250 for that tank of diesel. Touch wood I'll never make that mistake again, I now always triple check what nozzle I have in my hand and what fuel type I'm driving.
