put the money under ya bed and just drive it the way it is till you can buy a new car waste of time and cash trying to make a 1.8 go faster

You might be able to get a Remap from the big boys like Regal or BSR etc plus if you look in the Total Vauxhall Mag, Regal advertise all sorts of stuff and I have seen stuff for the 1.8 like inlet manifolds etc.
I dont think you will get any big BHP increases for the 1.8 so maybe look at suspension and wheel upgrades instead. You could have a car that is all show and no go rather than all go and no show.

1k to make it go faster is just not enough money mate, like andy has said regal do all sort's and you can even get a turbo upgrade, but 1k is no where near enough to see a real difference..in reality i would get an exhaust system made up and look at the air intake system, this combined should give you about 10 - 15% more bhp

You wont see alot of gains for a grand mate but you could get a sports manifold/cat for 160.
    full stainless system for 250-300..
panel filter and de-restric it 45 so you have 500 to spend after..it will feel a bit pokier but nothing extreme...spend the rest on suspension and brakes...or body mods...

I am in the same boat with the 1.8 mate

why spend money on the 1.9cdti and 2.2dti to make them go faster why not just buy a 3.0 cdti/dti v6 , you just work with what you have
