    Default the tank ran dry

we have just bought a 150cdti sri, the car ran out of deisel on my g/f, the little orange car with the spanner through it flashed up and it cut out, i filled it with deisel and got it started again, the car is running fine but when you first put the key on ignition 2 the little orange car with spanner comes on momentarily then goes off, it didnt used to to that, will it have stored a fault that needs clearing or will it have pulled some water through the deisel filter and will it need replacing, does this light normally come on if you run out of deisel, cheers in adavnce

Check your owners handbook, as there are three different types of this

There is the EMS light which comes on when you put the key in the ignition, along with the ABS light (and in some models other warning lights)
Once the EMS has checked they are working they go out

There is the "near service" which appears in the display within and under the rev counter
This looks like a car with a big spanner
    It appears briefly on startup

There is the "due service now" which also appears in the display within and under the rev count
This looks like a BIGGER spanner
It appears during startup and stays for some time

I would be more concerned if the EMS warning light comes on or flashes during normal driving
This suggests a sensor has failed
Equally, if you are near to running out of fuel the low warning tank light should come on at 7 litres and start flashing at 5 litres, and if you have the driver info centre there will be a range displayed for what is left in the tank
In a diesel, NEVER run out of fuel
The danger is not water but air, the system may now need bleeding to remove all the air
However, if you take the car for a good blast of 70mph for at least 100 miles then it should be OK

Did this when my car was only just out of the dealers from new... Spanner light came on when i ran out of diesel... Went out on its own after a good 30 or so key turns... So unless you fancy shelling out £40+ at a garage or dealers leave it for the week and see if it then resets itself, or you can cheat and disconnect the battery for 20mins...

Yeah mine did the same too. It still comes on now a week later- my range showed 4 miles left when it ran out. I think my tuning box sends incorrect info to the fuel computer?

It will for sure stop doing it within a month of normal driving if it is a stored fault code that is no longer active.

Trust me, I am a doctor.

Not sure what others think, but I would advise you get the filter replaced.

Those little code readers off Ebay will clear the light if it gets on your tits, about £20 a pop
