Is it the switchable TC with the button in the dash-if so, could it just be a dodgy button/swicth?

    Bye bye Vec B

The later vectra B (facelift) did not have a switch
Therefore it will be the warning light, showing it is active

The next step will be to test it to see if it is actually working
Take the car to a suitable location (such as an empty car park or road away from residents), with a dry well maintained road surface, put the front windows down, and switch the radio off

    Test 1 :
With the maximum amount of power accelerate harsh up to about 20mph in a straight line, then make a full emergency brake application
There should be a retardation of the fuel and the TC warning light should flash during this entire operation

    Test 2 :
With the car in 2nd gear, at about 20mph
Pull the car sharply left or right AND apply full power, putting the car into one complete circle, and after completing the circle make a full emergency brake application
Unlike above, there will be no retarfation of the fuel, instead the TC warning light should flash during this entire operation
In this case it is applying one of the rear brakes only (opposite to the direciton of travel) so as to prevent understeer

With the windows down you should not hear any tyre scream
If you do then you should be able to work out if one or more of the ABS sensors is not working, as that tyre will be making noise
In the earlier Vectra B the TC was switchable, and the test could be repeated both with and without TC; quiet and noisey respectively!

That's ESP not TC, I didn't know the Vec B had that fitted even as a cost option? TC works off the driven wheels only.

Not on the Vectra B and its the same on the Vectra C
The Traction Control monitors all four ABS sensors
There are two functions; retard fuel and brake application
With regard to brake application the TC has to have access to all four brakes to ensure safety and stability during application
If only the front brakes were applied then the car would instantly go into understeer due to the loss of traction at the front
This is also one reason why cars with TC tend to go through rear brakes faster than front brakes

ESP works one stage further by applying the appropriate brakes together (whereas TC only applies ONE brake)
This often results in a driver feeling a snatch from the rear of the vehicle during understeer as the car applies TC to the relevant brake at the rear and also hammering the opposite front brake
The reaction is so much faster than TC alone
