    Default Whistle from Turbo

    Hi
My 1.9CDTI [150] Vectra has developed a 'whistle' at low revs <2000rpm
It is noticeably worse when cold.

Had it checked at vx dealers who confirm it is coming from the Turbo.

    My question are :
How commom is this whistleing ?
Is it something I should worry about ?
Any solutions on how to resolve ?
Is it an indication that the Turbo is about to fail ?
Is a Turbo easy to replace or is it a garage jobbie ?
How much to replace a Turbo ?

    Sorry for the 1001 questions.

Thanks in advance for your help / advice

    Jason.

Turbo whistle is normal. It means it's working and spooling up.

It's a good sound to hear mate, sporty

Nothing wrong as long as you are still getting the power...

If you dont have a sports panel- or conefilter and you still hear the whistle, the turbo might be coming to it's end.

Hmm...how is that? The turbo will make a noise because it's the noise of the air being forced through (whistling). Mine has been doing it since I bought it on 60k, it is now on 85k and it's fine....

As above matey... unless you have a drop in power or excessive smoke, nothing to worry about

Apart from that, did they advise it was normal, something to keep your eye on, or an early sign of main bearing failure?

Under 2000rpm it is rare to hear the turbo, unless you have the windows down and radio off

Some do and some don't whistle.

It is all dependent on the trueness of the spindle on the bearings more than anything.

Also they get quieter with time if all is well!

I've ran a Citroen TD from 0-102,000 miles and a Fiat Ducato van from 0-150000 miles and both turbos quietened their whistles.

All I would say is that it is unusual that yours has just started whistling.
