    confused Engine management Light

Hello i am not sure how to use forums properly so i hope i am doing everything right here.
i have just bought a vaxhaull vectra 16v 1.8 S reg but there seems to be a problem with the engine management light. as soon as you turn the ignition key the light comes on and stays on. i also know little about cars only the basics but im willing to try anything new. is there a way to reset the engine management system or check to see what is causing it to stay on without taking it to a garage as im now pennyless. i'd really appreciate any support i can get. thank you

Fixing the problem is generally the only way. Once the fault is fixed the light should self extinguish.

Depending on the age of the car, you might be able to do the paperclip trick - http://www.topbuzz.co.uk/info/fault_...ault_codes.htm

or I've heard that the pedal trick may well work on Vectra-B's that won't let you do the paperclip trick.

thank you Big Dave tomorrow morning i will go out and try those methods. i 'really' appreciate the help. from what the guy told me he put a new cam belt on and since then its the light comes on and stays on. when the car is ideling it does feel like the car is rocking back and forth a little but i think that might also be part of the same problem. i will try first thing in the morning and post back. thanks once again much appreciated

The diagnostic plug is under a removable cover beneath the handbrake lever.

i figure the fault code is 0340 camshaft sensor.
the guy i bought it from did say it only come on since he fitted a new timing belt so im wondering if he forgot to connect the wires to the sensor.
im not sure where to find the sensor so i guess i got some more forum searching do do before i ask for anymore help.

Massive thanks Big Dave and johnsav for the support its much appreciated. oh and one last question before i go off searching... if i didnt bother sorting it out would it do the car any harm? thank
