Multimedia External Hard Drives??

can any one answer this question?

i have a phillips hts3164 dvd player with a usb port that i put my 4gb memory pen into to watch movies, would it be possible to buy say a 500gb external hard drive and connect that via the usb port?

i know there are multimedia external hard drives designed solely for this purpose but that means id have a redundant dvd player lol.

i done it to my xbox which i use as a dvd player now a USB HARD DRIVE PLAYER...soo should be able to aslong as the dvd plays movies via usb which yours does. then it should be fine.
