Default GSi snapped rear spring - advice please!

Oops wrong section - can an admin move this to the troubleshooting section?

The 2002 GSi snapped a rear spring last week so needs a pair of new ones.

There is a problem that I am wondering if we can get around at the same time. The car has a removable towing hitch and the bracket for this (which is the lowest part) grounds on speed bumps even when the car isn't towing anything. again.

We fitted spring assisters (http://www.springassisters.co.uk/) to keep the towing hitch off the floor and the spring broke right at the end of this. I guess this is because the spring can't bend where the assister is fitted - only above and below it and so there is extra pressure on the spring at each end of the assister. Also, you can imagine the ride in the back of the car is like with sports suspension, spring assisters, and our knackered roads.

Has anyone else experienced this towing hitch / sports suspension grounding problem and found a way of fixing it without using spring assisters? Also advice on good GSi springs to buy and where from would be appreciated as it sounds like the VX ones aren't the best.

you could try uprated/stiffer springs but this would end up lowering it too( maybe not a bad thing). There are a few custom spring places knocking about that may be able to help... I guess you're toing a cavavan/large trailer as you need assistors.. maybe a caravan forum could help?

If the car was any lower, we'd have to dig a groove along the road in front of it for the towing hitch to run in!

My sri is running on eibachs -15 compaired to standard sports suspension and the towing hitch is nowhere near the road. I can even tow the caravan with 70kg noseweight and the hitch is still not low (it can't be for the speed bumps on the sites). What are you towing!?!

Also what make is the towbar? I have never heard of this problem

I can't remember what the make of the towbar is - it was the only one we could get the we bought the car in 2002 and needed a towbar almost straight away. It does drop down quite low as it comes out from under the rear bumper but obviously we are stuck with it now. It looks like there is no other real option but to replace the springs with standard ones and put the spring assisters back in to maintain the height of the back of the car.

The caravan is small and light, and we check the noseweight every time to make sure it is correct.

There are some springs out there that are firmer but don't drop it any more, not seen them in a while but there out there. Also I remember seeing a spring which fitted to both the trailer and the tow bar that helped lift the pivot. I'd say a specialist caravanning forum would be a good place to start.
