I've just replaced mine because the lid had a big chip in it. All i did was remove the inner part which just lifts out then remove the plastic trim around the gear stick which just clips off easy, then with some force pulled out the ash tray it self! Its well clipped in but it does come out with some force!!

I clipped the new unit in and its all looking fine, hope it goes ok with yours

Angry Help! I can't get the flaming ashtray out!

    Hi all,

I am trying to get my ashtray out because the airbag controller under the gear lever has failed. I need to get the ashtray out to get the gear lever gaiter off so I can get the code off the top of the airbag controller module, but I can't budge the ashtray.

I can release the clip on the left of the ashtray (next to the cigarette lighter) because I managed to knock the light off (I hope it just clips back on ) but the clip on the right side just won't budge.

I can't stick my finger through the hole on the right side of the ashtray because the mechanism that operates the lid is in the way. I've tried to locate the clip with my finger and now the lid won't stay closed either .

I've tried the 'just pull' method but neither side will come out when I do that and I don't want to go snapping anything!

    All suggestions very welcome...

You don't need the ash tray out for that. just pull of the trim around the gear lever, then the gator. I think you would be better removing the drinks holder for acces to the airbag module though, which also pulls off.

    Good luck.

    Thanks. A few more questions...

I've taken the drinks holder out but all I can see under it is is the air duct leading to the rear vents. Is the airbag controller module under this or is it further forward - i.e. under the gear lever?

The gear lever gaiter goes under the back of the - can you get it out from under there without removing the ashtray?

Anyway, I suppose I nee the ashtray out now because I need to put the light back on and find out why the lid won't stay shut.

I still haven't been able to get the ashtray out and I'd like to get at the airbag control module today because I don't like driving around with no airbags.

The ashtray does need to come out because of the problems (that I caused ) as per my previous post.

All sensible ideas on getting the thing out welcome.

    Thanks.

It does take a fair bit of force bit it will come out mine seems to stick at one side when i removed it but faith and force will work... you could remove the gear gaitor the plastic trim clicks out by gentley pulling it in on itself (toward the gear stick) so it slightly bends and lift out... lift the leather and try and push out from underneath. Steve,

Thanks. It's the right-hand side of the ashtray that seems stuck solid. Was yours the same side?

I may give it another go but I fear breaking the clip on the centre console which would be expensive to replace. I don't mind breaking the ashtray - in fact I already have because the lid won't stay shut now.

I've got the plastic trim off from around the gear lever but I can't get the gaiter off - I think you have to bend the frame around the edge in to release it from the console but I haven't had much luck with that either.
