    Angry Bonnet Latch Problems

Tonight I went to open the bonnet on my 03 Vectra C and pulled the lever and heard a 'ping' from under the bonnet. It looks as though the wire rope and lug have seperated from the latch but I am having problems releasing the bonnet so I can get to it.
Does anyone have any tips on how i can pop the bonnet from teh fully closed position ??

    Cheers

You may find that it has come away from the clip on the slam panel meaning the cable is still actually connected but just not fixed down to the slam panel.

IF SO the lever should still have some tension in it, but its just not getting to the open stage.

IF THIS IS THE CASE, try this, undo the actual lever from the footwell area so it is in your had, and then give the actual cable a jolly good tug (you may have to take it away from the lever), you may find it flick open.

If there is tension there ant it still isnt opening, then get someone to gently push down at the front of the bonnet and try pulling the cable again.....

If this fails, the ONLY thing I can thing is to smash the Grille and manually pull the sping under the slam panel by sticking your hand under there.

BUT before you try the last bit, wait for someone else's comments too.....as I generally just for straight for the !

    HTH, best of luck.

The last one we had like this at work, I ended up removing the front bumper (you can just about get to the top clips under the bonnet edge) then removing the two rad support brackets to drop the radiater pack down by a few inches, it just enough room to slide a hand through with a screwdriver to flick the latch mechanism open.

This method will result in grazzed and bleeding hands but persevere and it can be done.

Personally i was all in favour of smashing the grille off, but my boss wasnt to keen on paying out for a new one! And having said that the access isnt great through the grill aperture alone because you really need to be on the rear of the slam panel to release the spring, and the grille out method only lets you see the front part.

Not an easy job mate, but it can be done!

Cheers guys, no offence vaux-man-g but I might try sri andy's suggestions first (my wife is already making enough noise about no being able to open the bonnet)
Was a real p%$# off when it happened and i have only just dumped the car 35mm all round so I had to jack the car up to even look underneath.

Will give it a try when I get home.

This is the usual method used by dealerships, as it is quicker than removing the bumper
Obviously you then need to fit a new grille, so make sure your dealership / garage / scrappy has one before you start!
If you smash and remove it, then find they don't have one anyone can come along and open your bonnet

What's to stop them smashing the grille to do so anyway? If they want to get the bonnet open, they're not going to worry about the mess and damage they create in doing so.

Agreed, but it's noise this creates and/or the time taken!
There are much easier ways into a car
After opening the bonnet, you will need lots of different tools to remove parts, and as yet I've never seen a thief with more than a few!

As stated in my earlier post, there is little joy to be had going in the grille route, mainly because the release arm for the latch is on the rear of the front panel and isnt accesible through the grille because the top of the bonnet and the rads are in the way.

Got the bumper off without too big a deal, getting to the pins near the the headlights was a bit of a pain.

Popped the bonnet open quite easily and re-fitted the latch cable but it seems quite loose. Does anyone have any advice on tensioning teh cable ?

Hey Andy, thanks so much for your advice mate, was spot on.
