Default Car and soanner when cold

    Hi All,
I recently purchased a 2.2 SRI DTI on an 02 plate private sale.
On a cold start i get the car with spanner through it image on the dash, it goes off after about 10 seconds.
Once the car is warm and you restart, it doesnt show and can stay off for the rest of the day. (i brought the car without seeing it from a cold start, the seller said he just nipped out to put petrol in it, now im thinking he warmed it up).
Should the car with spanner be showing when its cold?
I also dont get the glow plug display before starting up like most diesels, infact i havent seen it once is this normal?
It does seem like its using a bit more diesel than it should be, but not much.
Has anyone got any ideas before i take it to a Vauxhall garage?

    Thank you

Isn't that the reminder that a service is due? Does it come on again when you switch the ignition off and take the keys out?

Cheers guys, dont think its a service reminder i think that shows as "INSP".
It goes off after about 10 secs, and if i restart straight away it comes on again. but after a 10 minute drive it wil stay off for pretty much the rest of the day..
Has anyone ever had their glow plug light come on? i didnt know if perhaps my glow plug 'warning bulb' in the dash had gone??

Glow plug light only comes on around 5*c mate, you could try whipping the coolant sensor plug off & see if light comes on & how quickly the motor fires... you will get an eml with the plug disconnected until you connect back up

I have been doing so reading about this kind of problem as I am experiencing something similar except worse.

My car just won't fire up now. The fuel filter has been changed as I thought that it may have been the problem. Now when I try and start my car it gives me the same warning light and just splutters between 1000 & 2000 rpm even when foot is to the floor. The most worring thing is that the amount of smoke coming from the back is enough to draw a crowd from the neighbours.

The common problems I have read are about leak off pipes and injector seals. Its all to do with air getting into the system I think. Will be getting a VX mechanic to have a look I think as it appears to be common place with the VX DTI engines.
