    Default Another suspension thread!

All the threads about shocks and springs lately have got me thinking about my own suspension The car is a 2006 1.8 SRi with 15,000 miles on the clock. I find the ride quite harsh, it crashes and jolts over bumps which says to me that the dampers are either cheap and ineffective or knackered. A rebound test on the stationary car fells OK, so I'm concluding the OE dampers are poor quality.

The car doesn't feel quite as planted on long sweeping motorway bends as I'd expect, and it tends to float off of crests in the road leading to a very vague feel when 'making progress' on some of my favorite country roads!

If I'm going to replace the shocks then I may as well put better springs on at the same time. If I'm going to the trouble of replacing the springs then I'm highly tempted to lower it at the same time, but would that just result in me replicating the current harshness?

I guess what I'm after in summary and order of importance is to:
    1. improve ride quality/plushness
    2. improve handling
    3. lower the ride height

Oh, and I'm on a limited budget as well
So I'm thinking its got to be Bilstein shocks all round, but I can't decide on which springs to choose. I know the Eibachs are highly rated, but they don't lower the car by as much as the PI's, and they're dearer. How noticeable is the difference in ride quality between the two?

Any other recommendations or advice please (and apologies for the long post!)

The 'sports suspension' on SRi & SXi's are harsher than other VX models.I prefer the word 'firm' and I chose mind on that basis.
Road tests do remark on these and recommend the cooking versions of Vec C's if you want a soft(er) ride.
Low profile tyres can make the ride quality harder too. There are threads on this subject from Marky.

Better quality springs like Eibachs may help but, if you want a really 'plush ride' you may be better off chopping your SRi in for a luxury model like Elite.

Try some test drives and see how they compare.

Just a thought, have you checked the rear drop links and control arms? If these are worn or damaged they could well account for some of your handling problems.

I'm happy that all is working as it should and there's no problems with the car. There's also no way I'd consider changing it - I've always wanted the Sri, and I intend to get at least 80,000 miles from this one before changing!!

I'm happy with a firm ride, in fact I prefer it, but I was wondering what sort of improvement I could get from the Bilsteins and how that improvement would be felt, and also is there really a discernable difference between Eibach and PI springs?
