Default 3.0 CDTI V6 burning smell with loss of power

While in France I went to overtake a Citroen Berlingo and had to abort and pull in behind even though there was plenty of room. He accelerated as I was passing him which was a bit naughty but normally I would have blown him away. The car is a 55 plate with only 30K miles on the clock and has been chipped.
I have occassionally noticed a burning smell - I have spoken to a BMW mechanic he seems to think it may be a problem with the Turbo but I'm not so sure (it smells like the clutch but the clutch is not slipping at all)
I am now baffled as to what it could be
Anyone out there got any ideas
    Cheers
    Andy

Is it wise having a 3.0 diesel chipped...? Anytime anyone has tried to do anything with them they've goosed the fuel pump...

the facelift 3.0 doesn't like being messed about with. The older model was a little more robust for some reason.

    Cheers mate,

Horse door and bolted come to mind. But it was done by MPG in Middlewich who are very good.
Too late to do anything about that now

How long have you had it fitted mate...? I suppose if yours is a 55 plate it could have the old engine - anyone know when they changed them exactly...?

We had it chipped 12 months ago and its been fine until now. I don't gun it everywhere it just gets blipped from time to time. Overtaking mainly and I'm not heavy on the breaks as I'm still on the original pads.
When I do want the power though I want it to be there.
    Any Ideas
