Default Polishing machine - Which is best?

The missus has asked what I'd like for Christmas this year (Yeah I know! Already!!) so I have been thinking of a polishing machine.

Never had one so I thought I'd ask you serious detailers:

    1. Are they worth having?
    2. Which is best machine to buy? (not cheapest unless it is best?)
    3. What Pads are best?
    4. Anything else I need to know?

First off all thanks to all of you for your replies.

Lump - I like the look of the Chicago CP8210 & kit so it is a distinct possibility. Having read many threads on Vec C I know you know your stuff when it comes to detailing. You say 'maybe different pads?' what pads would you recommend? If I got this machine is it easy to get replacement foam for the rotating head? (I'm guessing this will need replaced every so often?)

I know detailing is a pretty wide subject but is there specific products you recommend for use with this polisher and what order do you use them in? I know sorry complete novice to these machines. I thought a wash with a sponge and using turtle wax Ice polish was good till I read your recent Detailing Guide. My god did that not wake me up to seeing just where I'm going wrong. WHAT A GUIDE! Excellent.

If you could give me some pointers I'd be most greatful. Im looking a quick guide if poss?

    1. Use THIS product with this PAD (after washing of course)
    2. Then Use THIS product with this PAD ...
    3. Then Use THIS product with this PAD ...
    etc..

    Cheers,

    Bri.

Its difficult to say use this product with this pad etc.. as most people find certain combinations work best for them, I bought some pads and polish which a guide found best worked for them, but I couldn't quite get the correction I wanted, so tried a couple of others and am now happy with combination of pad and polish.

I have only recently got into detailing with a rotary polisher and I have learned with a Silverline Rotary Polisher (bought off eBay for £30) and tried elite/3M and Sonus pads with Megs/Poorboys/Menzerna polishes, and I found the Sonus pads and Menzerna combination works for me on light sratches etc.. and the Elite Pads and Megs #83 on light/medium swirls. I am at the point now where if its correctable, I can do it.

The preperation for doing this is best achieved by the usual wash/rinse, clay (very important step)/rinse, dual bucket wash/rinse and dry.

The silverline package Lump linked to IMO is a very good starter for 10 and will get you well on your way to detailing your car.

This guide on the Detailing World forum is one of the best I have read and is where I picked up the most tips (along with Parsco too)

as above really. and you wont know what works for you till you do it, get the package you like the look of. as they all do the same thing from £30 t £300 unless you do it for a living then you will feel the difference. i really like These pads but i like any thing Chemical guys do. just remember to start with polish pads and work backwards. if you want to give me a bell and have a chat about it ill drop you my number ?
