    Default Coolant

How often should i / do you top up on coolant? the reason i ask is it seems every month or so my coolant light comes on and i have to top up approx 1/2 ltr at a time. There's no obvious leaks / smells etc but i've never had to regularly top up coolant on any other car i've had. 2005 GSI

Nothing obvious John although i'm topping the oil up just as often, but i beleive that is expected 1ltr / 1000 miles. If that was the case would it be head gasket? it's only done 33k with FVSH and i'm gentle on her.

Oil is normal to top up (within reason).
HG can go at anytime, my lasses punto blew a hole clean through the gasket at 39k. It was easy to replace but i'm guessing it may be a rather involved job on the v6.
Also is there any sign of steam coming from the exhaust. Another check to make would be to take the header tank cap off (when cold) and then start the car and smell for petrol.
Failing that a pressure test would be the only other way to find out

Er...., my 02 GSi with 67k miles on the clock doesn't use a drop of oil between it's changes every 10k miles.

IMO, 1lt per 1000 miles on the 3.2V6 certainly ain't the norm.

I used to lose coolant, about 1lt a month, but took the plunge and guessed right at a dodgy expansion bottle cap.

Sorry just realised you had 1 ltr per 1000 miles, i think it says in the book 0.1 litres per 1000 miles. So yes possible using a bit too much oil.

Mmm, you guys have got me thinking and worried! i'm sure i read somewhere 1ltr / 1000 miles was to be expected on these engines. I'll get it checked out at the dealer as i dont fancy the thought of paying to replace the HG on one of these although i think i'm jumping the gun.
