    Default Oil Leaking from Intercooler

    Hi All

Last week I purchased a '54 1.9 CDTI 120 from a dealer, unfortunately I've spotted drops of oil on the driveway and upon further inspection it appears that oil is leaking from both sides of the intercooler.

Presumably this is a sign that the seals in the turbo have failed? Would this also mean that the intercooler needs to be replaced?

Where would I stand from a legal perspective given that I only purchased the car from the dealer last Thursday?

The car has a full service history and has covered 74000 miles. The fault was not identified by myself before buying the car and was not pointed out to me by the dealer.

    Thanks
    Chris

just take it back and give them the opportunity to fix it before you consider taking things further.

    Will do.

Would it be reasonable to expect them to pay in full for the repair given that the car was most likely to have been faulty when sold (and was obviously worth less than what I paid for it as a result)? They do have on-site maintenance facilities so the labour charge to them would just be somebody's time.

Sorry, this is the first time I've purchased a car from a dealer so I'm not totally sure where I stand.

    Thanks
    Chris

Was it a main dealer (not necessarily Vx) in which case some kind of warranty would probably have been given?

If a non main dealer, just a second hand trader, did they give any sort of written warranty at the time of purchase such as 1 month, 3 months etc?

May be worth checking exactly what you got regarding this.

It wasn't a main dealer, no.

A free 3-month warranty was included, however I feel it is next to useless as it doesn't cover the turbo (I wasn't given the option to upgrade) and only pays out up to £250. I would have expected a warranty to exclude faults present at the time of purchase though, which this almost certainly was.

The dealer advertises the fact that they perform a '140 point check' on every car prior to handover, which includes an oil and filter change, checking for oil leaks etc, but I'd say that this wasn't performed throughly, if at all, particularly as the engine undertray doesn't appear to have been removed for at least 12 months (i.e. at the last service).

    Thanks
    Chris

What brand was the main dealer?
If VX, was the car marked as Network Q (although with a high mileage the cover is limited or not available)?
As above, the car should be sold with at least a basic warranty (30 days), unless detailed in the sales contract

If it gets difficult you state that you are protected via trading standards(?) as its not fit for purpose.
However, give them the benefit of doubt first then ring the CAB if need be.

I also agree with you about the source of the oil. The intercooler could be cleaned out.
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

sale of goods act says, i believe, that you have 28 days to be entitled to a refund or repair if faulty - the garage I bought my veccy from told me that! just so long as the oil leak was not noted down on the paperwork by the garage!

I certainly wasn't shown any paperwork detailing the oil leak - I would have changed my mind over the purchase if I had been.

Thanks for all of the replies, I'll try my luck later on and post back the results.

    Thanks
    Chris

Well the car is now booked in to be looked at/repaired on Monday, so fingers crossed.
