Whooshing noise above 2000rpm whilst driving in hot weather

Just got back from France in the Vec. It was red hot and I noticed a problem with the car on accelaration. In temperatures of anything above 25 degrees or so and when the car had been standing for a while or stopped in traffic when I accelarated it made a whooshing noise like a hoover above 2000rpm. This eventually wore off after driving a good few miles but returned next time I stopped at a set of lights or in traffic. Any thoughts?? Could there be some component on the car designed specifically for the rubbish UK weather conditions and could not cope with the warm air??

My 2.2 DTi was the same in the hot weather we had in the UK a month ago and for the following 2 weeks in the Dordogne.

I think it was the electric cooling fan behind the radiator kicking in to keep things cool when the car was travelling slowly or was stationary - i.e. not enough airflow to keep things cool.

It hardly ever comes on in normal UK temperatures, especially as it's a cooler-running diesel.

It's the turbo spooling up mate, you won't always hear it while you're driving but when moving away sometimes.

Nothing to worry about, it's a good noise

Thanks for that but it didn't sound like the turbo mate to be honest. This was a very pronounced deeper sound above 2000rpm. You hear all these stories about inlet manifolds, swirl valves etc and was praying whilst I was away it was nothing major. It has not done it since I arrived back in UK but it did do it in France when the temp was about 25 Deg or so. That heat is possible in UK so might pop it into dealers to double check.

Is this sound like a torrent of rushing water?
If so, then next time look out the back for black smoke as you boot it hard

That doesn't sound good!! It's more like a sound compared to air rushing. Like one of those big garden vaccuums

Cheap and reliable when coupled with the word Turbo don't go together.

Better to pay a bit more for a quality recon or a new unit!

just returned from the south of france last week myself mate, i have zafira cdti, made exactly the same noise but pretty sure it only did it when the aircon was on, now i'm back it seems ok not heard it at all.

Yeah. Talking to a mate who used to be a mechanic said it was just a fan and nothing to worry about. It has not done it since returning home.
