Default new to this. warning light

can anyone help please, i have a 1.9cdti veccy c 120. 2005. last night i turned on my ignition and a yellow warning light came on showing a spanner and car. wen i started her the light went out instantly. now every time i start her its doing the same thing. cars driving dead on no problems there. at first i thought it was sevice reminder but someone told me that that has a spanner and oil can warning sign(think she might be due a sevice). taking the car on the ferry to scotland next week and was hoping to get some feed back before i get it checked out. last thing i need is to be stranded across the water. thanks.

The reason it shows on start up for a few secs is to tell you a fault has been stored but is no longer present this will eventually go out after month or so.... you could take it to vx and have codes read to put your mind at rest buts its between £60-80 i'd leave it for now if its driving fine and as long as it doent come on and stay on then you've not a lot to worry about.

    HTH

edit: if you want the light out now you could disconnect battery for 30 mins then reconnect... to clear ecu stored codes.

Just to add, it will also reset itself if after approx 40 fresh fault free starts. I had the same on mine when I had it and Vec-C.com came up trumps with the info. I beleive it doesnt work if you sit there re-starting after 5 secs....

I also have the spanner and the car warning light when i turn on the ignition, 2 secs later all lights go out, except that one, it only goes out when the car starts

I thought this was normal behaviour ??

Nope, as stated, if it stays on until the engine has been started, then it is indicating a stored fault code. As it goes out once the engine has been started then that means there are no current errors.

But even when i try the key sequence to read the codes there is nothing there, my car has always done this, so thats why i assumed it was normal for it to go out when its started ?

    You have me thinking now......

Ok i did the following steps advised by Ste a while back, spanner goes out before car is started,

When i stop the car and turn ignition back off / on... spanner appears again, but goes off with engine start....

Anyone close with a fault reader who can help clear / read them... or post one to me and I'll cover P&P please and return

    Get in
Press and hold both brake and accelerator pedals to the limit of their respective travels
Turn ignition key to Position 2, ie dash lights on
    Release accelerator pedal
Re-depress accelerator pedal to the floor
    Turn off ignition
Turn on ignition to position 2
The engine symbol on the dash will then begin to blink
There will be a sequence of flashes, separated by small pauses between numbers and a longer pause between separate fault codes.
The number of flashes needs to be counted and thus the 4 digit fault code can be determined.

I have been through this with Vx if you have a pre-facelift then the spanner should not come on at all if it does then you have fault codes stored, however if you have a facelift the spanner light is part of the normal sequence and is only an issue if it does not go out when the engine starts.
