I had an Escort.. definately check the ignition system first. Dizzy cap, leads and plugs. However bad news.. the pickup pipe coming out of the tank and the pump are prone to fail. Means lifting the car up and dropping the tank down which is a bit annoying.

I found that out when I was flying away from some lights infront of the biggest group of pretty ladies ever... then the power steering went and a big puddle appeared as I slowly rolled into the nearest parking space

I'd probably say its the ignition set on these, the 1.6 engines are pretty good apart from the gaskets being leaky

    Default try this

i used to own a N reg escort. after it being laying around for several months, i gave it a run. and it was spluttering. i had a check and found water to be in where the spark plugs sit and it was mis firing due to water arcing the spark. i cleaned water out and checked and cleaned plugs.
it went perfect again after that.
it was a 1.6 dohc petrol zetec engine.

    hope it helps you

You don't state what mark your dads escort is but the mk 3 and 4 suffered with electrical problems caused by the ignition module (amplifier) getting very hot causing the engine to missfire or even cut out totally until it had cooled down.
Its located on the side of the dizzy and is a black box about 40mm x 35 mm fixed by 2 screws and has 4 metallic strips coming out the side.
    Hope this helps.
