confused 13 pin towing electric fault!

    Right chaps,

I have recently fitted a vauxhall towbar with genuine vx 13pin towing electrics,
connected the caravan for the first time and cant get the fridge to work off the car battery as it should. I believe the electrics should provide a permenant live for the alarm in the caravan and a switched live for the fridge? ( The theory being that when you switch off the car the fridge goes off to avoid your car battery being drained?)
    Is that right?

I have tested the 13pin socket on the car and there is definately no switched live!
Is this a tech 2 job?

    Any suggestions please??

    Thanks in advance
    Tom
PS. the car is a signum v6 turbo if it makes any difference

If its a proper Vx kit which plugs into the rear fuse box then yes, it would need activating by tech2
Plasma's Tech2 services are now open and able to provide services

Sometimes it does need tech 2, other times it doesn't. Do the lights etc. work??

    Hi Tom

Obvious question first, do you have the engine running when you tested? The 12V feed for fridge via pin 10 has to be 'engine running' ignition controlled (or the fridge would quickly flatten the car battery).

A common problem with 13 pin trailer sockets is that all 12 useful pins (1 is semi-spare) aren't all usually wired, the European market doesn't bother with fridge or battery wiring like us Brits do so most manufacturers supply 13 pin connectors with varying degrees of wiring.
Check if the 13 pin socket on the car has 12 wires and more importantly that pin 10/11 is wired, but note that if you have a pre 98 van it won't work anyway as that age van doesn't have the requisite 'habitation relays' but I'm guessing if the car is 13 pin then the van must be.

See this pdf download link for pinouts

Yes all the lights work, I have reverse and fog lights also. the reverse sensors do not work when the caravan is plugged in and also if I take a bulb out of the caravan it shows up in the cars diagnostics.

Everything works as it should apart from the switched live??????????????

The only pin in the cars socket that is not wired is pin 12?????????

    Thanks for the replies.

    Tom

Just sussed mine.... i have 12s and 12 n plugs and tested the switched live and did have it... The problem with mine was a corroded pin on the earth on the caravan plug... but 1 thing to check is that there is a 20amp fuse in your rear elec fuse box in the boot in holder 13. HTH
