    Default Swirl Valves 'Another Thread'

Just had a look under the cover and my swirl valve bar has finally come off. Power doesn't seem to be overly down and I have now warning lights at the moment........

I have read many threads on the 'DIY' repair .... or replacement.

Can anyone reccomend a good garage for repairs ...... or as there are no current obvious signs ...what would be any issues living with it?

The swirl bar fell off on my Astra CDTi 150 and I could not tell the difference, and I don't know how long it had been off ! My Astra has used a bit of oil from new (1/2 litre every 5000 miles - 2006 / 06 plate - now on 71000) and has black smoked under moderate acceleration from new. The swirl bar was sorted at the dealers in the last week of warranty by replacing the entire inlet mainfold. I have also had several problems with the E.G.R. valve and now have a slight whine from the clutch (stops whining when clutch depressed).

I have the same CDTi 150 engine in my 2008 Vectra (29000 miles) but I do not think I will be buying this engine again !

I don't think you will either, unless you buy an older car. The engine is no longer made.

It's been superceded I think by a larger 2.0l version (in 130 & 160 variants) which is probably loosely based on it but really should have these ancilliary issues resolved. Having said that, a 2008 version of the 150 1.9 probably has a much improved manifold anyway & this is what one gets as a replacement.

From reading the manufacturers document regarding the manifold via various links on this site, it would seem that if the linkage fails and the valves are set in the open position, then the engine will run fine through the rev range but a little more smoke at low revs?

Conversly, if it fails and the valves are in the closed position, then the engine loses all power at higher revs/load, this being the real problem situation if linkage failure happens in this mode?

It would appear from your situation that this may be the case. I seem to remember a recent post on the site where one of the regular contributors was going to experiment with removing the valves & sealing the bearing bores on one of these manifolds. It should be interesting to see the outcome if it is ever done.

At what point would do you get a warning light? Could be plenty of people driving around unaware of issue?

Also the updated manifold .... could I get one from a scrap yard or is new preferred?

Can any answer when the bar falls off .... what part has failed? The intake manifold itself or something else .... warranty won't pay up for swirl valve actuator (surprised not!) .... but will look at if something else???

    Any clues??
