cheers mate still well impressed, but i noticed earlier that on my trip down the motorway my trip computer was reading 107 miles remaining arrived at my destination still showing 107 when i got back in the car it was reading a tad over 80 miles left then when heading home on motorway it rapidly dropped to about 50 and once i arrived home the petrol just disapeared, does this sound normal

Reset the computer mine a couple of weeks ago and got 42 mpg on a drive to southampton and back (drove fairly conservatively) and now it's reading 34.7 mpg which is from town and some motorway driving (only doing about 20 miles a day), so at the moment I'm quite impressed with my mpg.
    Cheers Pete

I find the Range works off what your MPG is at the time not an average. When you start the car the MPG will always be lower. Although I never go by it as as you mentioned the last quarter of a tank really plays havoc with the Range comp.

    In importance:

    1. Accelerate slowly, the slower you accelerate, the less fuel you use.

    2. Don't go fast. if going 60mph uses 40bhp, going 120 does not use 80bhp, it uses 160bhp. (speed increase is squared) This means LOTS more fuel.

    3. If you are using your brakes, you just wasted some fuel. Think about approaching a roundabout. most people stay on the throttle till about 300yards, then start braking (fuel stops being used) until they get on the roundabout, and then get back on the pedal in 3rd. Far better is to come off the gas 800yards out, in the first 500 yards you'll drop a little speed, and use no fuel, the last three you can brake a little, drop into fourth, and continue coasting over the roundabout, only accelerating on exit. Foot off the throttle, in gear, your car will use no fuel down to ~1200rpm, then change down a gear, repeat. works the same on hills, queing for lights etc.

    4. Dump any dead weight from your car. Tools, kids prams, spare wheel etc are all heavy. Don't need em? Don't carry em.

    5. Keep your windows closed. Use the aircon, it's more efficient.

    6. Pulse and glide. that's a whole other topic you'll need to google yourself, but really only neccessary if you wish to hypermile.
