when should the cam belt be changed? is it around the 60k mark? also ive seen it mentioned about only using good fuel in them, is there any reason why not to use supermarket fuel? or is that ok but gota be the more expensive stuff? pick the car up wednesday, cant wait! will need filling as soon as i get it though and dont want to start its life with me off badly!! cheers in advance

The interval is something like 80-100k but most do it at 40k as they have habit of sometimes snapping ££££££
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

A stadard GSI will run fine on Supermarkert 95 or any normal fuel, although you will notice a lovely difference if you change to Super unleaded T99 Vpower etc.

VX changed the cambelt change to 40.000 miles as it had been known for them to snap. A good move is to change the water pump and the pullies and tentioner too.
As to the supermarket fuel. That is what I normaly run mine on.

Prior to changing the belt on my 02 GSi auto, I spoke to three VX stealers who all said 80k .

So I changed it at around the 58k mark and had the water pump done at the same time.

The stealers in Australia reckon that the timing belt should be changed at 120,000 km (75,000 miles). Interestingly my owner's handbook says 60,000 km (37,000 miles). I've now done 87,000 km (54,000 miles) on the original timing belt.

I use an independent garage and they still recommend 40k in spite of what the VX handbook suggests. They base this on past experience.

I once had one break on a Ford Escort (also before recommended change time) and the resulting damage was very expensive. Don't intend to be caught out again!

Better safe than sorry - the garage I use is very honest and I think they're right to go for the lower mileage.
