Default Not a happy bunny, only had the car 2 days.

Took my C into my local service station this afternoon as it sounds as though im towing a rattly metal trailer. The mechanic looked all over the car, found nothing. Drove the car and discovered that the noise stops when braking, however gently you brake it stops. Ok, its a 2003 car, ill get it sorted out.
    Then....
He found an exhaust thais soooo rotten it should never have passed the MOT in late March, then the bombshell was when he said "your sump is made up mainly of fibreglass mate"
This car was supposed to have gone through a full safety check and service before i had it delivered, now it sounds like its dragging chains and i could lose all my oil at any minute.
When my wife test drove the car it was a hot day, so the dealers dad went along with her and i stayed with the kids. (im on crutches, cant drive). He made sure all the windows were up and put the air con on full blast as it was hot and he was "showing her it worked". Now i know it was to cover noises up. He also took her along a long straight smooth road. Wonder why.....I am absolutely fuming and if he gets the rrrse with me he will be getting a rather large angry skin'ead banging on his door wanting money back. Also if he doesnt help me i will name and shame the dealer and the garage he uses everywhere i can.

As you're in Suffolk, you need to ring Consumer Direct 08454 040506, both to complain about the trader and to get correct legal advice on your consumer rights. CD will forward all the details to Suffolk TS who will contact you if need be. CD will send out all the car buying legal info - which is also available on their website.
    http://www.consumerdirect.gov.uk/

On the plus side, its a good job you bought from a trader as you have some recourse - not fit for purpose, unroadworthy etc.

Good luck in getting it sorted, should be aiming for either a complete refund by rejecting the car, or for the trader to make good all the necessary.

Thanks all for your replies. BoroDave74, thats great info mate, much appreciated.
I have just had an email from the seller stating that he will send me a cheque for £100 for the cost of a sump and an hours labour. He told me he is not obliged to do so but its a goodwill gesture. The email made me feel at fault for pointing out the issues. Apparently he was using the car himself for over 200 miles before selling it to me. Why do all ****ing traders say that?????????????????

This i sthe whole point. I have my wife and our 3 young kids in the car (i mainly drive my cresta) so if that bodge up of a repair on the sump lets go at 70mph on the motorway, whats going to happen apart from lunching the engine? The car would be the least of my worries in that scenario but it should never be a concern in the first place.

If it was still securely fixed and not blowing, then it's not an MOT failure.

Not sure if the Vec-C exhausts are double skinned (like the Astra-G's were) but if they are then chances are the rottenness is purely cosmetic. My dad's 51 reg Astra backbox is as rusty as a horseshoe, has cracks in the metal that are worse than crazy paving, but is still quite structurally sound as it's only the outer skin that's rotting away.

With ref to the rattle on the brakes that stops when you brake. Get the wheels off and check that the caliper slider and carrier bolts are tightened up properly, as a matter of urgency mate. I've had this once or twice at work, the last time being on a saab about two months ago. Also check that the pads dont rattle about in the calipers. They may have the wrong pads in, seen that too and they rattle like a piggy bank
