    Default Ford Fiesta running problems

Hi - apologies if this should not be in here, I know it says non-car related stuff but got a problem with my sister in laws Fiesta and couldn't see where else it should go?

Anyway it's a 98' R-reg 1.25L petrol that's started to run really badly - it's been like this for a month or so apparently and by the looks of it not serviced for at least 2 1/2 yrs.

It will start fine and idle erratically and not rev below about 3k rpm, if you try to rev it out of gear it gets "bogged" down as if it's going to stall and occasionally will. If you press the accelerator slowly the revs will eventually climb.

To set off you have to rev it to about 3k rpm and slip the clutch, once going its not too bad but low revs are just a nightmare.

As it hadn't been serviced for so long I got it an air filter, oil filter, plugs & pollen filter - usual stuff I can do. So changed the plugs & air filter which all looked to be at least 3yrs old - plugs looked knackered. And gave it a run, it starts much better now & idles perfectly BUT the problem with low revs is still there? As if it's fuel starvation or something??

I've checked every connection I can get to and sprayed with WD40 and checked all visible pipes for cracks or not being attached to anything.

If anyone has any ideas or what the problem might be it would be appreciated.

    Thanks - J.

Possible that the idle control valve needs cleaned/replaced. I've had my fair share of dealing with zetec's. Excellent engines when they run though

Right thanks, hadn't thought about the fuel filter but that should be another cheap one to try and easy to get to.

As for the idle control valve - would you know where that is located? Used to have a Puma before I got the Vectra so can always go ask on the pumapeople forum - sure someone on there will know - I know the 1.7 Puma engine was unique but the layout of my sister in laws Fiesta looked awfully familiar !!

    Thanks so far - J.

On the bigger engined zetecs its at the bottom of the inlet manifold, on the 1.25,1.4,1.7 the inlet is on the same side as the exhaust so i'm not sure. Better to ask on the puma forum buddy
