Default Astra SXI 3 Day Trial

Ever since the 888 came out I have been thinking about getting one or a 150 sporthatch and have the map applied. I thought the best way to get a feel for the sporthatch was to take advantage of the 3 day trial before it ends this month. I have been loaned the 1.4 SXI, which as far as I can find out is the same as an SRI, the same handling and driving characteristics but just a low powered engine.

What do I think, well, I am a little dissapointed, the handling is quite soft, it at first feels like it will corner very well but when into a hard corner it never quite weights up as you would expect. I have driven on the same roads as my current 150 Vectra SRI and honestly find that the Vectra corners much better, I feels far more stable, is much less prone to the front end drifting and also rides the potholes better, strange as the vectra has lower profile tyres and weighs much more. Also the quality of the interior seems much better in the Vectra, the Astra feels incomplete and of course being a two door car the doors seem a mile long and require quite some space to fully open them. The radio comes on automatically and when you tilt the seats foward and the whole seat slides forward they do not go back to their original position. Also the seats are not that good, I find the Vectra SRI seats to be far better, the Astra seat goes nowhere near low enough.

So overall I think I will be sticking with the Vectra, I think a few of you here have made the switch, how are you finding the sporthatch? How does it really handle, have any of you with the 150 driven the 1.4 or similar? Do you have to drive around with the sport button on all the time to make the suspension feel correct and if so does it make it unpleasent when you are driving steadily but keeping momentum through the bends due to snappy acceleration response, does the sport button truly effect suspension? Do you miss the Vectra at all?

Opinions are welcomed, does the sporthatch live up to the hype?

1.4 is a **** engine in the Astra IMO.

I bought a 1.6 for the company and it is greedy, noisy and doesn't handle.

The diesels are a totally different kettle of fish!

The Vectra seats are better, but sit higher.

I drive Vectras and Astras on a regular basis and I love the Panoramic roof one we have, but hand on heart at the moment, until I persuade the MD that we need a triple 888 Astra, I still prefer my Vec for the distances and overall comfort.

The sport button doesn`t do anything to the suspension unless you have idc option which controls the dampers i think ? Not trying to defend the astra because I have just bought one, but I don`t think the 1.4 SXi would be a very good comparison to a 1.9cdti SRi ?

I can`t understand why VX put out puny cars to try and sell them, 3 days to live with it, they should be putting out specced up SRi`s to try and sell them ??

    Default Sporthatch Suspension

Bainie I agree that the 1.4 SXI is a different animal to the SRI CDTi but the suspension and handling are supposed to be identical, so I don't see how driving the 150 would improve my opinion of the handling. Would be nice to hear from someone who has driven them both and can comment honestly about the handling without being swayed by the excellent 150 engine.

Does the SXi sit on 16`s compared to the 17`s/18`s on an SRi, would explain a bit of the drifting or has the SXi the same size / width tyres ?

    Default SXi Wheels

Yes, the SXI wheels are 16", that may make a little difference but I doubt it makes a huge difference. I can test drive the 150 diesel but not have it on loan, I may give it a try, see if there is much difference but I do not expect a great deal of difference in handling.

Think I might go and test the 888.

try the cdti both the 1.4 and 1.6 are like comparing a vectra 1.8 against the 3.2.

I also tested the Astra 2.l turbo -nice car nearly bought it but the petrol / insurance /road tax put me off

and I seldom use the 'sport' button for normal driving but its fun to have.
I find the car not as smooth as the vectra but then again its a diesel and also has a shorter wheel base.
My advice is if you have a lot of people in the back stick with the vectra if, like us, there's mostly just the two of you the Astra is worth a look and the 40+mpg and £134 (something like that) per year road tax is a plus.

Maybe we should remember the astra is not the same type of car and is classed as a 'medium' size car compared to the vectra's 'large' family class

    Default Handling?

Cyb how do you find the handling compared to the Vectra, I maybe expecting too much from the Astra. I expected the Astra to feel more grippy and eager to corner than the Vectra, nearer to the feeling I had when I had a scooby a few years ago. I will try the 150 in Astra form, but if it handles how the SXI does I will not be buying one, I want the handling too match a potential 0 - 60 mph in 6.5 seconds (after 888 remap of course) but not the reported bone crunching ride of the 888.

...the vectra is a large car that handles reasonably well for its size but I think you would find it struggling behind an Astra on a circuit (which is why VX use them in the BTCC and not the vectra). That alone must say something about the handling

as for the 888 -surely any car that is 'race bred' will have a much firmer suspension set up than the vectra?

Sorry but the vectra CAN NOT match the sport hatch for handling
vectra,s have very little feedback from the wheel, very soft suspension with too much body roll
much prefer the vectra b handling to the c

sport hatch has a much better feedback from the wheel giving you confidence to sling round corners....belive me be on a track with a sport hatch and it won,t move of the line you take though a corner ie; 90mph in a right hand(180 degree) hair pin! the car simply stuck to the road with no fuss.

The seats do have "memory" you just need to know how it works!
the trick is not to tilt the seat back untill you have pushed back the base
it will then return to its original posisition.
