Engine cuts out

I have a 1998 Vectra 2.0 GLS and when i pull up to a junction and dip the clutch, on the odd occasion the engine cuts out without any juddering. i dont even notice it's done it some of the time until i try to pull off. also when sitting at idle speed, it sometimes revs up to about 1,500 revs , and stays there for a while, without me even touching the accellerator. any ideas what it could be? It might be the air control valve. They do have a tendency to play up after a while. It is sutuated in the side of the throttle body. When it played up on our Vectra B. I removed the Large air intake pipe and sprayed carb cleaner into the Two holes on the left hand side of the bore of the throttle body, you will need to open the "flap" on the inside to get to the lower hole, these holes go into the air control valve, that may be sticking or gunged up. It is best if you can remove the air control valve and clean it more effectivly. But after time the spring inside becomes weak and a new air control valve is the only answer. But try the carb cleaner first. I found it to work for a while.

I had a similar problem cured with the fitting of a mod I think it was the rockerbox breather, available from VX. I was a small box fitted inline replacing a short piece of pipework. Hth ……..
