Default Whos ever had an alternator fail?

Well as reported last week on here after finishing work last Tuesday morning after a night shift, I knew there was something wrong with the car, struggled to start, fast idling, and then just as I got home 20 miles later the steering went momentarily heavy. I have a 55 plate facelift Vectra SRi 1.9 CDTi with 40k miles. As I reversed the car into my parking space it conked out and NOTHING would come back on. Had to manually lock the doors etc. Wasn't even any sign of dim lights, NOTHING. It was as if someone had disconnected the battery. The rev counter even froze at 1000rpm and so did the fuel guage and temp guage stayed where they where. So anyway, I was hoping it was a small problem. Checked my battery connection etc. Couldn't see anything out the ordinary nor could I smell any burning. Had to get it took on a flat bed that afternoon to a garage my mate owns in Llandudno. He has had to order a new alternator from Germany so I should be back behind the wheel by this Tuesday. God the grief it's caused coming to work without a car. Where I live Public transport would take me 3 hours either way, and doing 12 hour shifts, you can see how much I rely on the Vectra. What would you do? Keep the car when you got it back from the garage, or part ex it and look for something less likely to give problems (if thats possible lol)?

He said that when the car arrived, he tried a new battery in it straight away and it fired up first time, but 5 minutes later smoke came out of the bonnet. Thats when they located it was coming from a failed alternator. It had also damaged the battery so I need a new one of them too. He has told me it's going to cost around £400 and odd to repair which am happy with, going off some prices I have seen people pay on here for a similar problem, I believe it costs over a £1000 for the 3.0 v6 CDTi so guess am lucky with my 1.9 CDTi. How much has your failed alternator cost you and how long was it before your car was back on the road? Isthis a common problem?

The guy fixing mine got the alternator for £240. Should he be changing the belts and tensioners aswell or will the old ones be ok?

It's best getting a reconditioned one, am sure thats what most replacement alternators are anyway. They will be half the price and just as good.

I paid £240 (trade) and then got £86 back (£154 total paid) for returning the old alternator, I bought mine from a local motorspares shop (04 plate 1.9 cdti 150 PS).

I had the battery light come on last Monday (14 Sep), stopped driving car that day, ordered alternator Tuesday, picked up alternator Friday and fitted yesterday.

Had mine changed about a month ago it was only two weeks out of warrenty, but luckily i had taken out a warrenty with the AA. Cost me my £25 excess. Price at steelers in Barnsley was £700 fitted including £69 diagnostics, even though the AA had identified the problem. Anyway i got it done at anouther car dealers for £460 .
