    Default new job opportunities

has anybody worked in saudi or UAE and what is it like. reason im asking is i have been shortlisted for heating engineer position in riyadh in saudi and for a maintenance plumber in dubai. i think i'd much rather have the dubai job as the standard of life seems to be much better, yet there is a 30,000 pound a year difference in wages and the money would certainly help.
i know thats probably never gonna happen knowing my luck... but i can dream.

Yea, go for the extra cash mate. Yea Dubai is fantastic, but not as fantastic as another £30,000 in your back pocket

I'm in the construction industry and a few of my mates have moved to Dubai after being made redundant here. There are a lot of horror stories at the moment as Dubai's economy is wholly based on a speculative property bubble which has burst. Saudi is a better bet, but it won't be much fun.

    Default Coming home from Riyadh

I worked in Riyadh 24 years ago so will not bore you with what it was like then as of course things will have completely changed.
However one thing I would warn you of is becoming used to the big money and the expat life style. Folk generally went out there with the idea of making some money over two or three years then coming home again.
The reality was that it was extremely difficult when we did come home to re-adjust not only to the reduced income but "normal" life style.
After a few months "home" at the end of their contract folk, even if they were lucky enough to have found another job reasonably quickly, were desperate to return to Saudi and many did. In fact I know of one guy who is still there after 20 odd years!!! So it clearly works for some.

So consider your objectives very carefully. If your primary aim is to make some big money over a few years and return "home" then be very very careful not to get used to spending it as well! And remember it may take you a while to find another job and these savings, which may have been your primary objective can very quickly disappear.

    Regards,
    Dave
