Question DMF / Clutch replacement on 1.9CDTi

    Hi All,

After 121,000 miles my Vec's DMF has finally started going on me (and my god it's an awful sound). I'm looking to replace it ASAP and get a new clutch put in at the same time, but as it's going to be an expensive job I'm trying to cut the costs as much as I can. So I have a bunch of questions. The car's a 2004 1.9CDTi (120).

    1) Am I right in thinking I need to buy a DMF, clutch kit and slave cylinder? Are there other parts I need to be looking at getting my hands on?

    2) Is it true that there's more than one type of gearbox for the 1.9CDTi and that the parts I need to buy depend on which one I have? If so how / where can I find out which one applies to me?

    3) Does anyone have the VX part numbers for all / any of the above? The car's a 2004 1.9CDTi (120)

    4) I'm off on holiday at the end of August and will be covering around 1800 miles for the trip. Is the flywheel likely to hold out for that kind of mileage or should I expect it to disintegrate down a dusty lane six miles from the nearest town? Don't fancy being towed home half way across Europe!

Sorry for all the questions but as this is likely to be the most expensive job I've had to fork out for on this car I don't want to rip myself off.

    Cheers,

Hutch (making a rattling sound near you).

Can't answer all the questions, but I will what I can...... dependant on its condition, you may need a master cylinder too.

As for DMF life once the rattling has started... mine has been doing it for about 10K+ miles now (its getting replaced on Thursday) and it drives no different to before it starting rattling (apart from a slight more judder when labouring).

    Cheers Dan,

That's good to know, it's only been doing it for a few hundred miles so I might tempt fate if I'm feeling brave - time to check what kind of Europe cover I've got with insurance and the RAC

Any further advice would be much appreciated. Best price I've had for a DMF, clutch kit and slave cylinder so far is around the £500 mark

Just done mine, you need the dual mass flywheel and the 3 piece clutch kit, i.e. clutch plate, pressure plate and thrust bearing, the lot for mine set me back £470 plus 3.5 litres automatic transmission fluid and a top up of brake fluid. The rest is just spanners and graft!
