Default Not what I wanted to hear.

    Morning, all,
Not a great day for me, as we've all been told at work that we're under threat of redundancy -10% of the work force will go by the end of the month.
I've managed to get through 34 years of employment without going through this, so I'm understandably worried. At 50 years old in IT, it might be hard to find anything else.
If anyone knows of any IT jobs, specializing in backup and storage, give me a shout!

    Phil

Sorry to hear about this Phil, up until last month I was officially at risk of redundancy and have been through two consultation phases and selection processes in the past two years, so I know what you're going through. Luckily for me I have secured a new role within the same company that is as safe as can be given the current climate.

I'd recommend that you find out as soon as you can what the selection criteria is for identifying the 10% that will be made redundant and start preparing for your consultation in which you'll want to demonstrate how you meet that criteria. I guess if you've been there a long while you'll be wanting to know your redundancy entitlement as well so that you can lok outside the company for alternative roles with the prospect of a nice pay off in the event that you could get a job elsewhere.

Probably the best piece of advice I can give is to try not to take it personally - it's the roles in the organisation that are no longer needed by them, not individual people.

Good luck with it - try not to let it get you down.

PS.. I'll keep an eye open for any vacancies that come up at our large data centres in Stevenage, but realistically I have to say most positions are being filled internally at the moment

I too work in IT and have been on Server support and now backups. The company I work for has been going through redundancy cuts for about 8 months now. So far I have avoided it but it's getting harder and harder. I am on 31 and have already been made redundant from my last job when they shipped the whole department to Spain!!

I will keep my fingers crossed for you and hope you don't get given the boot.

KTM’ Chris’s advice of ‘try not to take it personally - it's the roles in the organisation that are no longer needed by them, not individual people’ to me sounds spot on it’s their loss.
Let’s hope things pick up for you Phil ‘Good Luck’ ……

Thanks for the good wishes, folks
I've only been here 18 months, so I don't qualify for redundancy. That kind of makes it easier, as I don't have to hang around if I find something else.
My skills are unusual, in that I specialize mainly in enterprise backup solutions. This is a double edged sword, as the jobs are rare, but there's not much competition when something does come up!
I'll let you know what happens.

I was in the same boat m8 , i'm 32 and i've been made redundant 4 out of my last 5 jobs !! it's bloomin depressing but there is light at the end of the tunnel . I'm in IT also and there is tons of contract work out there but very few permanent roles and the ones there is are vastly underpaid compared to 12 months ago. Under the current climate i think companies are too scared to employ permanents . Dont worry you will walk into contracting , i was officially made redundant july 1st , i got my first contract role 2 weeks later and on monday i am starting a permanent role and believe me i thought i was doomed less than 1 month ago! Keep ya chin up m8 it WILL come good.

Good luck, although you may not get the chop anyway m8
