    Default Alternator ??

Tried to start car 06 sri cdti 150 this morning but was as dead as a dodo. So presumed an interior light had been left on draining the battery. Connected to battery charger and charged away.
Disconnected charger and started car, everything fine for about 1 minuite then lights and computer started to flicker, some strange noises then dead again
Warrenty run out on the 10th of july. Any ideas people ??

I'd get the alternator checked mate, it is a common fault on a certain batch of Vec's, mine went last year, over £300 from the dealer. Might be worth trying scrap yards etc. There was very little warning with mine, power steering went first, fortunately just as I pulled onto my drive. I hope you can get it sorted without to much cost or grief.

How long did you charge the battery for mate? because a fully charged battery should get you quite a few miles before the car drains it again. I charged mine overnight and could use the car the next day just a couple of local trips though and it was fine for the couple of days I needed to sort the new alternator out.

if covered by the aa - get a mate to tow you a mile down the road ;-)

have a look on somewhere like eurocarparts

prices will be cheaper than stealers

but alternators are exhange units so - be prepared to either hand over your old one or pay a surcharge until such a time that you do return the old one

0-Large smile ......every time it's driven

I'd charge as long as possible mate, (overnight idealy but if your'e only going quarter of a mile leave it as long as your timtable allows, and turn all power off e,g. Radio.

    Vehicle : Vectra

    Trim : Design

    Engine : 1.8 VVT

    Year : 2007

    Mileage : lots !

    Default

A few years back, my 2 litre Cav had a dodgy alternator. I knew it'd be the weekend before I could change it, so carried a spare battery and just changed it when it went flat - in my case every 12 miles or so on my 14 mile work journey. Mind you, it was winter / dark etc.

Having said that, the old MK2 made it from Norwich to South Mimms on the battery alone......

    Ok update is as follows:
Got the car away from home, called AA they were with me within half an hour, very good service. After a bit of testing he said it looked like the alternator. Ok happy days i thought, all covered in my warrenty. He asked me where i wanted to go, so i suggested Vauxhall,( should have known better) So anyway he swapped batterys with one out of his van, and we made our way to VX at BAUGH GREEN BARNSLEY, aa mister following.

So got paperwork together and made my way to the desk. Explained i hadnt claimed before so could you talk me through it please. Well i could feel a pulling at my belt as the young guy told me,( as he pointed to a stuck on piece of paper on the desk ), that id have to first pay a £69 diagnosis check as they had to check everything them selves Which of coarse isnt covered by the AA warrenty. i ask the young man to find out how much the alternator that the AA man diagnosed would cost. He said he hadnt a clue but theres two sorts a cheap one and a dear one,( i could feel anouther tugging at my belt ) and would have to go and find out. Ok about 5 minuites later ( id tightened my belt back up by then ) the young man came back with a piece of paper. Then BANG ! belt had been pulled off, trousers down and yes!! £617 inc vat im afraid. Well as you can imagine i was very sore by then as my warrenty only allows £500 parts and labour.
I quickly pushed him off, pulled everything back up,and said i was going to ring the AA to check cover, and left, a bit dazed and confused !
So i calmed down and made my way across the road to a well know japenesse manufacture who said they will do it within the buget
